Leaving Laurel [Debut Album Out Now]

This January saw the release of ‘the family we find’, Leaving Laurel’s first original track since their 2021 self-titled debut LP and the tragic loss of friend and band member Pierce Fulton. Now Leaving Laurel release ‘fireflies (for as far as we can see)’, a poignant collection of tracks characterised by warm piano and inviting textural percussion.

Originating from old projects that Gordon and Pierce had recorded years ago, ‘fireflies (for as far as we can see)’ is a fitting reminder of the duo’s unmistakable coalescence:

“As soon as I heard what it could become, it gave me that indescribable feeling of magic that came the first time we worked on music together. And that became ‘the family we find’. The title ‘the family we find’ comes from a translation of a line from the movie ‘Tokyo Godfathers’. A movie about togetherness, following three homeless people that have found their own family together…. In a lot of ways, it reminds me of my connection to the rest of the Fulton family, since Pierce and I started Leaving Laurel."

Making this record was my search to find purpose after Pierce passed. It was a light to show me a way forward. A way for me to grieve, a way for me to hold onto the memories. A eulogy to my friend.

This is the album I always hoped Pierce and I would make together one day. It's my attempt to continue the dream we had, to take what we had started with our first album to a secret place beyond the club. To make a soundtrack for the moments where everything stands still. A record that could showcase the culmination of every unique influence we shared as friends. A record that could be important enough to outlive us both. A record that I hope would have made him proud.

It’s the hardest I’ve worked on anything in my entire life, and the proudest I've ever been of any music I've made. If the road for leaving laurel were to end here, I know I gave it my all. “It all began when one of us was Leaving Laurel”.

For Pierce and Gordon of Leaving Laurel, their music is a story of an old friendship that over many years, almost accidentally, blossomed into a musical collaboration.  Friends on the internet first, and eventually roommates in Los Angeles, the pair spent years together making their own separate brands of dance music, long before ever collaborating with one another. Gordon was one half of bass heavy duo Botnek, whilst Pierce found fame and toured the world with his solo project.

One day in Laurel Canyon, California, the pair were sharing their own unfinished music with one another. Pierce had an idea for a demo of Gordon’s, which spawned an impromptu writing session lasting the rest of the day.  Elated by what had just happened, they continued to write together over the coming weeks, but just as they were getting new momentum, Pierce had to head back to his home on the east coast.  The final song they wrote together before his flight was called ‘Leaving Laurel’. The music Pierce and Gordon made together is rich with emotion, densely packed with atmosphere and often featured Gordon’s own gentle vocals. 

Pierce always envisioned the music they made together in California as an album, and after having released many of their early songs over the past year on Anjunadeep, they set out to finish everything they had started during that time. In revisiting the rest of their ideas from that era, they had realized - it all felt like one moment in time. One feeling. One chapter. The pair finished their debut album at the start of 2021, just prior to a horrible tragedy.

Pierce passed away in April of this year after a tragic struggle with his mental health. This album is dedicated to his memory, and has come to represent much more than two friends making music together in the Laurel Canyon neighbourhood of Los Angeles. The album announcement comes with today’s release of ‘Winter In The Woods’, a track inspired by the duo’s time isolated in the woods of Connecticut & Vermont. Pierce’s struggles were very private, and with this album Gordon and Pierce’s brother and manager Griff want to let the world know simply this: 

It’s ok to not be ok.  

It’s for anyone who can relate to his pain, and to know you are not alone.

Leaving Laurel has announced their sophomore album ‘when the quiet comes’ will land May 19 via Anjunadeep, with the first single ‘one last thing you never said’ out now. The announcement marks a new chapter for band members Gordon Huntley and Griff Fulton following the difficult loss of Pierce Fulton, whose talent and passion were immortalised in Leaving Laurel’s acclaimed self-titled 2020 debut album. 

There is a unique songwriting process central to ‘when the quiet comes’; a reflective record awash with warm piano, inviting textural percussion, and delicate melodies. As Huntley discovered recordings laid down by himself and Pierce years prior, he was driven to continue what they had started. Like seeds planted in the winter, forgotten musical ideas emerged and flourished, providing a cathartic sense of closure for Huntley and a new musical beginning for the band:

The last time we played Kings Hall at Brooklyn Mirage was our second gig ever as Leaving Laurel, in October of 2021. It feels like a really long time ago. Emotions & nerves were high.. everything felt very new to the two of us. We didn't quite know what DJing as Leaving Laurel together would sound like at the time but we were having fun figuring it out. 

Fast forward almost 2 years later, to this past Friday & it felt like our set in Brooklyn had become all of those experiences together compressed into one moment. We felt calm & proud, knowing Pierce was right there smiling.

We both used to play in bands. We are also both quarantined together. It was only just recently, during this strange time, that we decided to start jamming and playing music together live - outside of the studio. This is our first attempt at a live show - no laptops, mostly improvised, with some destinations in mind.

A new project from American producers Pierce Fulton and Gordon Huntley, Leaving Laurel made their emphatic label debut in January, and have since garnered a huge fanbase after remixing Anjuna maestros Andrew Bayer and Luttrell and releasing ’Through And Through’ on Anjunadeep’s flagship compilation, Anjunadeep 11.

‘Through And Through’ now receives an EP release alongside two new tracks ’Take Your Time’ and 'It’s Never The Last (Things Never Last)’. With warm enveloping arrangements, the duo’s latest reinforces their reputation for heartfelt analogue electronica.

We decided to move from the hut to the living room for this one. We chose some key signatures, prepared a few drum sequences and loops and captured 2 hours of what happened. This is our most experimental and improvised live session yet.

Garnering support from the likes of Claptone, Cassian, Sebastian Leger, Kidnap and Phil Taggart at BBC Radio 1, Leaving Laurel have developed a penchant for organic sound design and intimate songwriting. Their latest EP titled a 'A Secret Place’ reinforces  this reputation over three beautiful new tracks, written and mixed in their home studio in Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles.

Live From The Barn (November 2020)

“It all began when one of us was Leaving Laurel”.

For Leaving Laurel, their music is a story of an old friendship that over many years, almost accidentally, blossomed into a musical collaboration.

Birthed in late 2019, American artist Pierce Fulton and Canadian producer Gordon Huntley together as Leaving Laurel have developed a penchant for introspective melodic electronic music.

Inspired by their time together in the hills of Laurel Canyon, and from their formative experiments recording into old cassette tape players, the project materialized seemingly out of thin air - something neither of them knew they were looking for.

Chasing the nostalgic sound that came from their first collaborations, the pair finished their debut self-titled album at the start of 2021, just prior to a horrible tragedy.

Pierce passed away in April of 2021 after a tragic struggle with his mental health. The album is dedicated to his memory, and has come to represent much more than two friends making music together in the Laurel Canyon neighborhood of Los Angeles.  

After some time to reflect, Gordon decided to collect the pieces of the remaining music the duo had started, and to carry on with the project.

In the fall of 2021, Leaving Laurel played their first shows since the formation of the project, with Pierce’s older brother Griff taking Pierce’s place for their DJ sets.
