First show of technically “Summer” here in Chicago. This one is slightly more uptempo than my usual OpenLab probably inspired by this past month’s trips to Detroit for the Movement Festival and week in NYC for some release events and general vibe soaks. Was most inspired by the Hidden Sphere’s Improvisation track so just went in with a grip of new tracks, a few classics and personal faves and see what came out.

A new monthly series of mixtapes, in which we invite First Word friends & family to lace us with a selection of their soulful favourites from across the board. For July's edition, we welcome DJ Sabor A Mi — the Sete-based selector known for weaving together rich, emotive sounds from all corners of the globe. On the mix, Sabor A Mi says:

“This mix is a tribute to cultural mixing, and to all the connections it makes through music and its history. The selection has a guideline that is established in Afro-Latin rhythms, but crosses the Caribbean and the eras. Going to Soulquarius in SoCal this Saturday and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to make a mix bc the lineup is just too stacked. This one features a song by every artist that'll be performing. To name some - Pretty Ricky, Ja Rule, Ashanti, SOSUPERSAM, Too $hort, Eric Bellinger, Brandy, and Erykah Badu.

When I think of the 2000s era of R&B, I immediately think of how thugged out dudes in oversized clothing talked to their shawties on the phone in like almost every music video, so tried to give the intro that nostalgic feel. Shout out if you know which music video the intro is from! Enjoy :)

Every mix in our series is special for different reasons, but there’s no denying that a new one from DâM-FunK will always turn heads. The multi-talented American DJ, musician and vocalist is a one man funk machine who has spent his life distilling boogie, g-funk, electro and synth pop into his own modern take on the genre. The Stones Throw afficionado and Glydezone head honcho has an encyclopaedic knowledge of music, is a prolific producer and collaborator with the likes of Snoop Dogg, and for ten years has hosted his own LA party Funkmosphere. Also, make sure to keep your eyes and ears pealed for his upcoming release ‘Architecture II’, dropping in August. 

This selection is very much like a night at one of those events: at nearly three and a half hours long, it touches on every facet of DâM-FunK’s sound from the opening and closing eighties synth-pop of Prefab Sprout to Jayda G’s recent tribal house cut ‘Sestra’s Cry’. Next to those, an impossibly diverse list of house and funk names includes Omar-S and Sylvia Striplin, 808 State and Barry White, Bas Noir and YES. As is always the way with DâM-FunK, each track is given the respect it deserves. The mixing is unfussy, often allowing tracks to end before slamming in the next one. Sometimes he moves the mix forwards, at others he takes a brave sidestep that would seem impossible on paper but that makes perfect sense in the context of this mix. All that means its likely you’ll keep on coming back to this timeless selection for many years to come.
