Bside Incoming: Ruben Spa

Reflecting on Episode 100 with the incredible Detroit In Effect, we just wanted to thank all the people that tune into Bside Podcasts, to everyone who reaches out to us with positive feedback, and of course to all the fabulous guests who take the time to share with us their life’s work of collecting, curating, and sharing all the beautiful music in the world.

Without wanting to sit back and admire this landmark, we move on from number 100 with an international superstar to Episode 101 with someone very close to our heart and an integral member of the Bside team: Ruben Spa

With a big love of music, his graphic design skills, and some social media wizardry, his creativity and passion continues to drive the project forward. Ruben Spa continues to build upon his invaluable knowledge of the industry with his involvement at the Surefire agency. He also runs the Koselig event series in Edinburgh, who booked Hidden Spheres for an evening of mid-week madness at Sneaky Pete’s, before which we recorded an incredible live episode of the podcast. 

It was actually his co-founder of Koselig, James Cook, who recorded the very first episode for the Bside podcast. Over 2 years have passed since then, and the platform has grown substantially: 99 other guests and more than 60,000 listens from all over the world, and lots more in the works. 

So, it felt only right that our beloved Ruben Spa, should welcome us into the second century of Bside. Expect jazzy keys, horns, and chord progressions over house, hip-hop and broken beats, moving through beautifully layered techno and IDM

Ahead of our party with Zaltan on the 21st of September he's put together a mix for our podcast series...

Don’t look for the latest Zaltan 12”, there is very little chance that it gets released anytime soon : Zaltan rather puts all his energy into his mixes and in running his label, Antinote. Wandering through recordshops and flea markets, looking for French rarities and yet to be discovered records, Quentin Vandewalle has gathered thousands of dancefloor-friendly tunes of all eras and from all over the world. Teaming with Raphael Top Secret for years as the cult Parisian duo Zaltan & Top Secret, he definitively knows how to keep a party going.

Zaltan has been djing for more than a decade and he makes a point of honour to deliver mixes as surprising and versatile as the label he runs. If you show yourself at a party where he plays you may find yourself falling into a maelstrom of Caribbean bangers, French proto-house tracks, dark electro fantasies and god knows what else he’ll take out of his bag.

Support comes from two very good friends of High Hoops, Annabel Fraser and Bitzer Maloney. Two NTS regulars and self confessed vinyl enthusiasts who have previously graced the stage with killer selections at High Hoops. 

Expect the unexpected with a night of twists and turns. Paris meets Manchester via our favourite Salford warehouse.

George Mihaly & John Paynter Virtual B2b (George's Mix)Part II

During quarantine, I went over my collection of records almost completely. The result is a mix of non-obvious nu jazz and classical jazz combined with a Brazilian groove. Many of these records simply lay there and were waiting in the wings, because such music is often found beyond the stereotype of public spaces and events. The mix was created specifically for the jazz dance community. A group of activists promoting the UK jazz culture both in St. Petersburg and in other countries.

Nick Verwey born and grew up in Melbourne. Combining with a few friends Dawn Again created Raw Wax. It's a collective of DJ’s that threw parties in his native town. He lived in NYC and Berlin and his draw lessons helped him with a creation of his own Enjoyment Division Label. He has always focused heavily on production and proudly sports a slew of 12"s on his own label and others like Love Above Records, Houseworx, Rothmans, Tusk Wax, Blind Jacks Journey, Ombra, Wonder Stories, Roam Recordings, El Diablo Social Club.

@earthtraxonline is a name you may have come across if you’ve been following labels such as Shall Not Fade, Rhythm Section, and Phonica Records the last few years. His characteristically deep and melodic take on house and breakbeat represent a methodical approach to the genres. Earth Trax carefully injects an undoubtable amount of emotion into his music through ambient layers, euphoric pads and heart-tingling melodies.
