This one was written and recorded on a boat whilst on Regent's canal.

This is a track that we used to play in Flowers of Evil, circa 2007. It was always one of my favourites. It was initially a 3 piece arrangement, with me, Paul Barnecott and Dean Pearson. We never recorded it properly. I recorded this version at home on a laptop with guitar, played bass and drum parts on midi instruments. Not quite the same as the lads but was fun trying to remember it!

The guitar in the intro is trying to imitate the sound of a delay pedal, which I do have but am pretending I don’t . Soooooooo clever! 😄

Roses on the railings

This track was inspired by the Ethiopian singer Mahmoud Ahmed, who was immortalised by the Ephiopiques album series. 

It features a typical crossbeam rhythm and makes use of a pentatonic scale different to the one we use in blues. Like a minor scale but only playing the 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 intervals.

Like a ghost

Every band has a ballad, and this was the ballad of evil by Flowers of Evil. Now sadly lost along with the unmastered album Flowers of Evil by Flowers of Evil, and featuring the hit single Flowers of Evil.

This song has me Lee Haley on Vox. And I can't remember who plays guitar because I left mine on the fucking National Express coach which went to Edinburgh and back so it might have been Dave Burdis or it might have been me, me being the evil one. One of us played the bass. Dave Dorward definitely played the drums.

It's an extremely evil song, making extensive use of the devil's interval (the flatted 5th) and with very dark lyrics dreamt up as a dystopian working daydream.

The year was circa 2014.

The Ballad of Evil - by Flowers of Evil

A song inspired by the history and antics around Highgate cemetery in North London.The grounds were closed for about 50 years, during that time the place became neglected and overgrown and became a regular night time haunt for satanists, glue sniffers and other visitors. Bodies were often moved around for various purposes and there were reported sightings of ghosts and vampires.

The song was written by me performed by me arranged by me and produced by me at home. Drums are from an easy to use sample program. It could definitely be better. Any comments welcome.

Cover of Van Morrison's "Beside You", my favourite track from his seminal 1968 album Astral weeks. Heard a live version which finally enabled me to discern the rhythm of the song (6/8), thus giving me the confidence to lay it down. Hope it makes sense ;)
