Following the resonating success of their initial collaboration, the TLF Trio—comprising Danish cellist Cæcilie Trier (CTM), pianist Jakob Littauer, and guitarist Mads Kristian Frøslev—reunites on Latency with electronic music legend Moritz von Oswald for the follow-up to their debut album, Sweet Harmony.

TLF Trio, along with Moritz von Oswald, once again delves into the realm of chamber music, this time with two new songs further exploring the intricate acoustic dynamics of their instruments with electronics. As the second instalment in this musical journey, New Songs & Variations builds upon the minimalist, sculptural, and narrative qualities of its predecessor, weaving a tapestry of expressive and plural voices.

Moritz von Oswald, a central figure in the electronic music scene since the early 90s, brings his wealth of experience to the project, reinterpreting two of TLF Trio’s previous works. From his early days as a classical percussionist to groundbreaking collaborations in the techno sphere, von Oswald’s influence has left an indelible mark. His role in co-founding Basic Channel/​Rhythm & Sound/​Maurizio and contributions to the Berlin-Detroit-Chicago axis have defined various strains of modern music.

New Songs & Variations not only captures the rich history and influence of Moritz von Oswald but also showcases his ongoing exploration into classical, experimental, and improvisational contexts. From recomposing Ravel and Mussorgsky’s music for Deutsche Grammophon to acclaimed collaborations with jazz trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær, composer Laurel Halo, or Afrobeat pioneer Tony Allen, von Oswald’s versatility continues to evolve.

TLF Trio and Moritz von Oswald invite listeners to embark on a sonic journey that bridges the past and the present, mirroring the transformative essence of Louise Lawler’s distorted image, which graces its cover—a testament to the delicate fluidity and shape-shifting nature of the music contained within.

“For Barney, Who Was A Bad Dog, But A Good Boy, And Very Much Loved.” comes from Brooklyn-based Dekalb Works, the collaborative project of Austin Peru (Vision Fortune) & Daniel Creahan (Sweat Equity / Alien D). The record summarizes a series of experimentations between live performance contexts and sample-heavy collage work. Since starting their residency on Radio alHara, Dekalb Works found themselves drawn to the act of performing, whether as a live act or DJing, and the space between these two often overly rigid modes.

“For Barney…” draws heavily on the sonic palette of American country and western music, treated through the lens of heavy studio processing and the production techniques of dub, ambient, and trip-hop. Recording hours-long live improvisations with guitar, piano, or drum machines and samplers, they pillaged these sessions as source material. Whereas previous work focused on the voice and the interaction of text, voice and music, these recordings pulled from the sounds of musicians playing together in a room. The arrangement process remains the same, chopping and manipulating small samples and momentary gestures into dense, rhythmic collages.

Things Got Weird Fast

Minais B is the solo moniker of Villads Klint, who also produces deconstructed pop cuts as a part of the trio Khalil along with Nikolaj Vonsild (When Saints Go Machine, Cancer) and Simon Forman (Age Coin, Yen Towers), whose debut album was released August 25th on Posh Isolation. In his solo project, the young producer explores movement and contrasts in sound, and “As The River At Its Source” is no exception hereof. It stays in motion from the beginning to the end, constantly moving from one frame of mind to another, ultimately maintaining an atmospheric quality throughout the entire duration.

In “As The River At Its Source”, Minais B is uniting alluring and challenging sounds by merging sonic experiments with a profound, soothing melancholy, questioning when a sound is beautiful and when a stranger becomes an acquaintance. At times the piece lets its listener drown in dreamlike arpeggios and synth pads, while suddenly breaking down in order to proceed with a passage consisting entirely of restless bass-heavy beatings.

As his first vinyl release, Minais B delivers a very mature offering on “As The River At Its Source”, a highly emotional endeavor in contemporary ambient music, touching on the complex nature of human connection.

Michigan based electronic music label, Kaiseki Digital, brings onboard London producer Thugwidow for their 71st release. Known for his airy breakbeat productions ranging from the low to the high end of the bpm spectrum, Thugwidow really knows how to set the atmosphere with his tracks. Foment is one of them, an ambient drum and bass track with cleverly laid out drum breaks, classic dub wobble bass, and melodics that jump in and out of the track teasing you and keeping you engaged as the track progresses. A perfect track to listen to when your alone and want to reflect. Goddess will be available on Bandcamp February 8th.

"Instead of total hatred, we give you TOTAL SOLIDARITY. We present you with the compilation created thanks to the cooperation of Oramics collective and the person behind New York Haunted label - Drvg Cvltvre. All proceeds from the digital sales will support Polish queer organizations: Kampania Przeciw Homofobii and Miłość Nie Wyklucza, who monitor homophobia, provide all kind of support for queer people and have agreed to help us redistribute the proceeds throughout LGBTQIA+ organizations in smaller cities and towns of Poland, who need them the most.

Among the supporters of our action, you will find international headliners, underground stars, beginners, heroes from our local scene in Poland and music from the members of Oramics collective.

In recent years, we have observed an evolving campaign of homophobia run by the right-wing Polish government, spread by the government media and fueled by the Catholic Church. We have heard that the LGBTQIA+ community is a plague, a dangerous ideology, a threat to morality and Polish culture and should be fought with fire. These words caused an eruption of violence, e.g. recent pogrom-like attacks on a Pride march in Białystok and targeting queer people on the streets as well as their allies wearing rainbow symbols. This atmosphere of disrespect, violence and hate leads many Polish queer people to depression, migration or even suicide. 
The electronic music scene in Poland has recently taken a stand and many initiatives, festivals, collectives and clubs declared their solidarity and support. We want to take it further and do what we do best: share our passion for music and creating spaces where we can all feel free and at home. Music, art and the club scene are all parts of culture which is not and cannot be indifferent to historical and social turmoils or political oppression. Quite the contrary, it has always been the voice of resistance. Club culture is something more than hedonistic sounds letting you forget about your everyday life, it is something more than a way to make money - it is a tool that can help other people. Apart from the fundraiser party at Jasna 1 on August 9th 2019, we present you with the compilation “TOTAL SOLIDARITY” created thanks to the cooperation of Oramics collective and the person behind New York Haunted label - Drvg Cvltvre. All proceeds from the digital sales will support Polish queer organizations: Kampania Przeciw Homofobii and Miłość Nie Wyklucza, who monitor homophobia, provide all kind of support for queer people and have agreed to help us redistribute the proceeds throughout LGBTQIA+ organizations in smaller cities and towns of Poland, who need them the most. It took us less than a week to collect more than 100 tracks from all kinds of electronic music genres, from various different producers from far and near who wish to support the queer community in Poland. Once again we want to pay respect to the roots of club culture in queer, people of color, anti-gentrification, anti-state oppression struggle. We want to say, sing and bang it out loud: Queer rights are human rights. We’re in this together.

The fight for equality in Poland is an ongoing battle, so the compilation has an open formula - whoever wants to contribute after the release, please contact us.
