DSNT Podcast 047 - Ryan Dallas - End Of Year Mix 2014

I was lucky enough to be able to play at Shine a good few times over the past few years, so I thought it would only be right to get a mix recorded for their 20th birthday celebrations! 

Out of those 20 years, I reckon I've spent well over half of them going to Shine first when it was weekly, then when it was monthly....and all of the tracks in this mix have played a big part!

Probably could have done at least another two hours with all the tracks I wanted to play, but you'll have to make do with 2hrs 30mins for now....

Recorded all in one take with all my old vinyl, so hopefully it's not too messy!

UIQ Session - 'Being No One' - Lee Gamble, Mark Fell and Thomas Metzinger in conversation..

Recorded in Lisbon, Winter 2017. I present the first volume of Synthesizer Ditties inspired by a bygone age of witches and wizards, knights and dragons, enchanted swords, haunted graves, sacred forests and regal kingdoms. Recorded almost entirely on a Korg Monologue + spring reverb / LN76 (TR-08 on some ditties also). I've not made the other volumes yet, but when i do, maybe i'll put it out as some sort of expensive compendium or do a limited dubplate run or something else annoying like that? The third release on The Henning Christiansen archive label features a previousely unreleased work from 1991. The Wandering Human Being - The Wandering Voice, as the title suggest is a piece for voice and featurues Carlo Quartucci, Carla Tatò, Ursula Reuter Christiansen and Henning Christiansen. 

Ursula and Henning met the couple Carlo Quartucci and Carla Tatò through the curator Johannes Gachnang on a visit to Genazzano in Italy 1983 and became close friends, collaborating on a variety of projects, most notably on Carlo and Carla’s epic adaptation of Heinrich von Kleist's play Penthesilea (forthcoming on The Henning Christiansen archive). 

The Wandering Human Being - The Wandering Voice came about from a conversation between the four of them whilst on a beach on the island of Møn in the eastern sea in Denmark, looking south. Here they all laughed at the realisation that on the other ide of Europe in this direction was Sicily where Carlo and Carla lived. The island Sicily, The island Møn. As Henning says “The human-being was wandering from sea to sea”. Henning saw no difference in their way over life ‘over there’ and mused on the means of which we cross over oceans and move around facilitating awareness of the same family of human being. People from islands meet people from islands and they can all look across vast waters and laugh together.

This conversation and collective realisation of the simplicity of it all lead to this work which is one of the finest in Henning’s vast catalogue. L´essere Umano Errabando La Voce Errabando is a mantra for four voices, the sound of the ocean, a pvc tube, effects and wind instument. The piece moves in an organic hypnotic fashion lulling and rolling, ebbing and flowing over the two sides of the record. Rudimentary phrases in various languages interlope and weave a mystical music, as primitive as it is ‘contemporary’. 

The Wind, The Stars, etc are repeated over in random untrained fashion. The two couples from different countries weave voices, words and language into a common sonic fabric which eradicates identity, the idea of ‘national’, the idea of country, the idea of difference.  

Unlike anything else in Henning’s output L´essere Umano Errabando La Voce Errabando is a calm and meditative work which rolls along two sides wrapping the listener in a random melancholic meditative mantra. Only Henning Christiansen could summon such haunting, beautiful, gothic music carved from political hope.

Another Café – the sophomore Café – following last year’s ‘Café Kotti’ tape sees Wilted Woman and Nick Klein back as a live electronics duo. Their second freeform performance took place at London’s Café Oto in September 2019 during an Alien Jams night. With more preparation but the same amount of looseness, the pair steer away from genre definition and self-importance, manipulating recordings from jam sessions, skillfully altering samples from various sources alongside modular synths patterns. The result ‘Cafe Music 2 : Werewolves Of London’ is a spellbinding flow of meditative drones, beatless rhythmic explorations and unsettling melodies.

Central to the duo’s process is carving out space to play and laugh with (and sometimes at) each other. The two friends have developed their own communication tactics for remote idea generation and exchange – Nick Klein is based in the Hague, with Wilted Woman in Berlin. This also allows them to perform live without imposing rigid structures onto the project.

The pair build upon each performance to create a world of their own which, in turn, should lead them to many more Cafés.

What is this prize we speak of?, well, producers and bands/singers/musicians will have they're tracks fully mastered and featured on the upcoming Flog the Bog music compilation to be released in April 2014 on Advanced Electronic Records as well as having the chance to perform on the Flog the Bog main stage at the upcoming festival planned for Easter 2014. Successful DJ's will have sets recorded also "live" on main stage at the festival, mastered with crowd sound included and also featured as part 1 of a mix series on the Flog the Bog compilation!. Successful artists will be commissioned to create work for the " The Flog in the Bog" compilation series as well as creating the artwork that will shape the imagery of the festival. All winners will also receive 5 free tickets for they're friends, a bottle of Champagne or Whiskey (whatever your tipple may be) as well as free passes for themselves and band members (where applicable) to roam untouched at the festival with untold goodies also lined up.
