Right Kind of Personality is taken from the new album, FREE TIME/DEAD TIME. Released on vinyl and digitally by Brachliegen Tapes, 15th April 2023. FREE TIME/DEAD TIME is the first full-length 12" LP from Robbie Judkins’ long-running experimental sound project LEFT HAND CUTS OFF THE RIGHT. The album combines elements of focused minimalism, experimental electronics and twitching musique concrete to create a series of meditative compositions that reflect on the precarious boundaries between labour, leisure, and the quality of lived experience under late-capitalism. Judkins exploratory practice of sonic experimentation invokes the work of Black to Comm, Laaraji, Ashtray Navigations and Kali Malone across its seven dense movements.

Sound artist Robbie Judkins returns to Brachliegen Tapes as Left Hand Cuts off the Right with Every Movement, following 2023’s 12” LP Free Time/Dead Time. Moving away from the synthesisers and processed sounds that tunneled throughout Free Time/Dead Time, Left Hand Cuts off the Right resolved to employ a focused sound palette of treated acoustic instruments on Every Movement. Composing for other performers for the first time, the result is a densely layered assemblage of chamber musique made concrète that is characterised by mutability and unrest.

The Rat's Letter

Created using - zither, melodica, tin whistle, piano recordings, tape loops, effects and circuit bent devices.

This was a semi-composed, semi-improvised piece following a talk about my practice and in particular the issues of animal rights and mental health issues in my work. As part of the In Formation series.

"Purge is an album created during a time of reflection, recovery and listening following a severe brain and skull in injury in December 2017. Following my discharge from hospital whilst recovering physically I was also given time to reflect and face difficulties in the quiet of the north west of England.

Focused, delicate and repetitive methods of improvising and composing these pieces were a part of my recovery both mentally and physically. The process began with me needing to be still and quiet sonically and physically but as my health improved I could tolerate and work with distorted patterns, hiss and thuds. The album was created using digital piano, field recordings, radio and effects.

The album is part of a continuing process of creating sound as therapy and a distraction for coping with mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. The album and track titles refer to thoughts, experiences and reflections of my health during those four months in recovery."

Oaken Palace Records proudly presents I Can Wait, a new full-length album by Left Hand Cuts  off the Right (aka Robbie Judkins), a sombre but comforting, beautifully drifting set of four  pieces for zither, melodica, synth and mbira. The quartet of tracks was recorded in 2018 but  appears now as a timely sonic missive that absorbs a sense of individual uncertainties amid a  collapsing wider world, but provides a response that reaches out to create a haven of calm,  reflective resonance. 

Robbie says of the recordings, “During bouts of depression I have found playing simple,  repetitive and attentive melodies to help - it allows me to focus on listening and playing in a  reciprocal way. This has often evolved into me developing and adapting these pieces to become  listening experiences at times when my mind needs to be somewhere else.” 

The album unfolds serenely over thirty-five minutes, constructed of faint chiming, delicate  drones and soft crackles. Patient and meditative, it gives the impression of computers in an  office talking to each other quietly at night-time, or road-sweepers and rubbish lorries  murmuring in their sleep, the peaceful breathing of a tired city.

Left Hand Cuts Off The Right dedicates OAK-019, I Can Wait, to the Pied Tamarin(Sanguinus bicolor), a critically endangered monkey whose home in a small area of the Brazilian Amazon is severely threatened by deforestation and habitat destruction. All proceeds from tape sales will be donated to its conservation and protection. 

Oaken Palace Records is a registered UK charity (#1154786), raising  
money for environmental causes through releasing drone records  
dedicated to endangered species. Since 2012 the label has donated more  
than £15,000 to conservation organisations around the world.

Left Hand Cuts off the Right (Robbie Judkins) is an outlet for exploratory methods and composition. During live performances he plays with bent electronics, acoustic instrumentation, hand percussion, field recordings, loops and effects. The sounds are of otherworldliness, twinkling twitchings, habitual drones, crackling rhythms and oddities directing you, transfixed, through the wonderment.
