Italy is a country that’s never been shy when it comes to electronic music. The home of some of the scene’s most dedicated, passionate and talented DJs and producers, it embraces electronic music like few other countries across the world. As a country, Italy itself has long been a melting post for different sounds and cultures — and its modern musical output is no different. Patrizio Restelli’s Castanea label serves up a firm case in point. 

Established in Patrizio’s hometown in northern Italy, the label has played host to some of contemporary minimal’s most exciting names: think the likes of Topper, Pressure Point, Sedee, Birdsmakingmachine, Zefzeed and more. Under his Modbox alias, Patrizio is similarly responsible for a quite brilliant output that showcases the very best of modern house and techno. The label’s latest release sees Restelli turn to Romanian producer Nu Zau for an original EP, with the remix coming from a long-time favourite of ours, Dubtil. Winds from remote eastern lands descend rapidly on our plains, lurking between memories and feelings, whilst the drums of liberation play the same hypnotic patterns repeatedly - as in an ancient ritual. The sorcerer behind the Dorothy's Dream alias gives us three original cuts filled with pure minimal mystery, backed up by a remix by US-based talent Chklte, who adds some harsh 909 drums on his version of "Arambol", closing the EP but not the enigma that surrounds this release.

Swedish imprint Seaweed Records launch their new sub-label, Seaweed Rhythms with a warm, minimal house single from zlene & Mathias Hinds which includes remixes from Rowlanz and Per Hammar. zlene aka Bäcksvart combines with the artist, friend and Stockholm local Mathias Hinds to inaugurate the new sub-label with their ‘Djup Trolling’ single which is about exploring the unknown with consistency and precision. Seaweed is inspired by Sweden’s nature and marine life as the label’s studio is located right by the Baltic shore, as they show their appreciation for the ocean with organic samples and recordings from both above and below the waters which have become a continual feature and theme within their work.
