As dusty-hearted burner-gypsy-nomads here at DeeplyMoved, hypnotic, Middle-Eastern influenced tunes are among some of our favourite to get lost in, and just that precise flavour of otherworldly, desert vibes prevail in Helmut Dubnitzky and Jackspot’s mesmerizing “Keres,” by way of Romania-based imprint Cyclic Records. Off the eponymously titled EP “Keres,” the track’s namesake is a nod to Greek mythology, in which “the Keres were female death-spirits,” according to my inside sources at Wikipedia; an apt name for the mysterious aura conjured, just slightly tinged with melancholy. Subtle in its approach, various mystical elements like glittering chimes are patiently presented, floating aloft on a haze of ethereal pads. Strumming notes set in an exotic scale lead the melody, with occasional bassy oscillations, subtle pitch-bending in the strings, and other slightly trippy sounds lending surrealism to the mood. It’s such a lovely and enthralling journey.

Chicago’s Kate Simko is one of recent years USA’s most accomplished electronic music talents – a genuine music love who commands equal respect behind the decks, the mixing desk and the keyboard.

Having chalked up releases for Hello?Repeat, Supplement Facts and Spectral Sound as well as a debut LP for the latter’s parent imprint, Ghostly International, Simko’s talents have been widely noted while recent releases and a live show alongside Tevo Howard as PolyRhythmic have cemented an already cast-iron reputation.

‘Go On Then’ in original form is a textbook example of subtlety, with rich yet unobtrusive production and flickering melodies giving way to Jem Cooke’s earthy vocal and songwriting talents. Ian Pooley, a true house-music master, builds on the original’s uncluttered aesthetic with an unctuous bassline-driven version that gently wraps itself in cossetting melodies before opening up at just the right moments. It’s these melodies that are allowed to run riot in Pooley’s dub, making for an intensely absorbing listen.

Franck Roger treads a heavier, MAW dub styled, path with his Mix version, where clattering percussion and earthquake bottom end provides a zippy undercurrent for a heady mix of warped vocal effects and gritty synths while his dub mix pushes a more urgent, harder backbone through the tripped out textures.

The ascendant Blond:ish close the package with a sub-aquatic lesson in low-end theory where every element has to have it’s own melody, space and counterpoint and deep house is a futurist artform.

Leftroom Records opened its doors in August of 2005 in Nottingham, England. The label is the creation of Matt Tolfrey (Owner). Musically, it was one of the first labels of its kind in the UK, showcasing the off centre sound of house, disco and techno.

Distributed now by Above Board, the first release surfaced for the label on the 5th of December 2005 and was entitled ‘The Extended Family EP’ encapsulating the spirit of Leftroom, a place where a core set of artists could grow and experiment with their sound. The Leftroom family consists of a few key artists including Laura Jones, Huxley, Gavin Herlihy, Sam Russo and Matt himself.

April 2006 saw the launch of Leftroom's sublabel, Leftroom Limited. Musically Leftroom Limited brings a new dimension to Leftroom as a whole, concentrating on anything that wobbles from straight up house, to techno and even the uplifting. The first ep for the sublabel was Tolfrey & Sylvester presents: Popeye-Spinach Disko, a slow brewing, techy, disco record, which came out the end of May 06 with many plaudits. 

With Matt being label owner he proved his A&R capabilities are pin-point in securing one of 2007’s biggest tracks, Ito & Star’s ‘Suduko Kid’ and one of 2008’s biggest crossover tracks, Rocha and Lewinger’s ‘Down Seq’. The summer of 2011 brought you Laura Jones's 'Love In Me' which was a global phenomenon, and Maceo Plex's remix of the same track was Leftroom's first no 1 overall seller on Beatport. In 2012 Kate Simko's 'Go On Then' featuring Jem Cooke stole all headlines, and the same year brought you Matt's debut artist album 'Word Of Mouth.' 

With new albums and mix compilations not to far away, and a whole host of new releases, Leftroom is sure to carry on where it left off which is delivering high quality, diverse dance music.
