Welcome to the May instalment of the Atmospheric Existence show on 1BTN.FM, where this month we welcomed supreme selector and good friend Matt Pond with a special Deepsystems mix joining the show as our May guest.
Matt Pond is a man who understands that the gulf in hierarchy between DJs at the top and bottom of the food chain is as vast as it’s ever been. Despite or maybe because of this, Matt Pond is one of those guys who has picked substance over style: modest and demure in his demeanour, you only have to scratch the surface to realise he’s a seasoned professional who’s been in the business for decades. He’s a humble individual who sees past the glittery awards and their accompanying hubris and has stayed loyal to his loyal stalwarts of underground culture.

Matt created Deepsystems, a party, a radio show and a moniker, which has beamed out endless heartfelt sounds worldwide for many a year, weaving his own story that emits emotion, groove, funk and pure future soul. If you've not heard Matt's music before, i can only say that here is an individual
who will not settle for anything but the very best.
A DJ at the top of his game, with a unique deep style, that favours musicality and substance and in my eyes up there as one of the very best in the world, hands down.

The mix in his words:

"To my ears, 'groove' is a certain culmination of sounds that evoke a feeling. That type of feeling that makes your eyebrows furrow and head start bobbing involuntarily. A certain rhythmic funk that makes you put on that stank face and say, “yeah, that’s that good shit”. Groove helps me sink into that pocket, where songs start blending and dancers’ steps never fall out of rhythm. This mix was inspired by this feeling. I started off with some OG edits and tracks, the kind of funk my pops would bump in the garage way back when. Later in the mix I get into some more house and club sounds while making sure the underlying groove stays alive."
