The Melbourne scene just keeps on delivering. The latest act to grab our attention is Close Counters, Finn Rees & Allan McConnell exciting duo. 

Following the success of their collaboration with Allysha Joy on "Speak In Truth", the duo deliver another broken house meets soul heater on 'Something In My Drink', the second single to be taken from their forthcoming 'FLUX' EP. 

Over a broken house groove, Melbourne based singer Jaydean sings of a night turned sour. JAYDEAN has previously collaborated with the likes of Kaiit, Sampa The Great and SZA. 

The duo describe The EP as a continuation of "our deeper exploration of dance and house music, projecting positivity through rhythm and song writing. 

Having started playing live with a full band during the development of this project we have incorporated a lot more live playing in these recordings. 

With a background in jazz we thrive off the spontaneity of jamming and improvising when developing our music and are constantly trying to find the sweet spot between multiple musical worlds of groove.”

Nick Wisdom - Under The Moon

Over the past 6 years WOLF Music have earned their stripes as stalwart purveyors of refined House and Disco. Now, in the follow up to Medlar and Greymatter’s debut LPs and EPs from the likes of Ishmael, Ossie and Casino Times they ready their 3rd LP from Dutchman Frits Wentink.

Now residing in Amsterdam, Frits has a glowing back catalogue of soulful, Lo Fi club material that’s touched Heist Recordings as well as WOLF in the form of his ‘Mouse’ and ‘Goose’ EPs. With an experimental approach to hardware and instrumentation, his work blooms naturally through jams and improv and in this - his debut LP: ‘Rarely Pure, Never Simple’ we see a development in this experimentation to enlivening effect.

Working with a meld of grubby samples, chunky percussion and the frequent vocal accompaniment of Utrecht based Loes Jongerling, Rarely Pure Never Simple is a journey through Frits’ influences forged into a cohesive pack of grooves and interludes tinged with a certain charming nostalgia.

NYC based producer and head honcho of the (in)famous, Wall Of Fame, label, makes the trek to Texas for Whiskey Pickle Records "third shot" on their new minted vinyl series. His groovy brand of sampled house and disco has leant classy tracks to many a release on his home turf, but its rare that the beat smith venture into uncharted territories with his prized compositions. The folks at Whiskey Pickle must have liqoured up the ole boy up in order to finagle such a delightful EP out of him, and thankfully, us boppers are to benefit! "Water," the A1 opener kicks off with some chunky drums and an uptempo chug as layers of percussion and dancefloor onomonpea's create a bed for the piano driven groove to unfold... a scorcher! Move inward for "Don't Wanna Be" and the tempo drops dramatically. A hypnotic, looped beat gets a syrupy bass riff and cavernous funk-claps until the gorgeous, mono-synth lines appear and carry us to utter ecstasy! Flip it over for "Moods," a track that is as lovely and emotional as it's title suggests. The vibes sampling and superlative drum programming create an exceptional, dreamy frame work for the groover... perfect for opening sets or a much needed, dancefloor breather. Lastly, " Your Dance" snips some familiar territory into a perfect energy builder with beefed up muscles, perfect for modern heads. Watch out for the mighty horn stabs and flanger flourishes, they're gonna prove to be DEADLY!

When The Unbelievable Two appeared on the scene in 2014, their pure underground, analogue boogie and disco sound mirrored what was going on in the vinyl infected bars and small cellar clubs in their hometown of Hamburg/Germany. “The Unbelievable Two” was inspired by the golden age of the genres, played live with skills and insight. Four years later, boogie and disco are all around us. So it is about time that these pioneers release their second album. Honest and authentic, “Power Plant” recalls late 1970s New York Disco and mid 1908s UK Boogie.

The Unbelievable Two still is Mzuzu and Mucka, who lead us through nine new songs of speedy disco, down low boogie and even some smokin’ reggae. Recorded in late 2017 and through the spring of 2018, “Power Plant” tells stories beyond the surface level. “Even though our music is purely instrumental, it doesn’t mean we haven’t got anything to say,” explains Mzuzu, a respected and well-travelled vinyl DJ on the Germany funk/disco scene. “Boogie and disco are a universal language. With the influence of Afro, Latin, Reggae, even European electronic music you do not need a lot of words to tell a story which gets everybody connected. These songs are about our friends, our everyday life, how we life and what we feel.”

The name Hugo Mari might not ring a bell just yet, but we’ve got a feeling this is about to change real soon. He’s released a handful of EP’s under his former alias Books on Omena and XVI including his own edit series on the latter label (check out his killer track ‘in the groove or his jazzy deep house collaboration with Zodiac called ‘Feel it in my Bones’). Considering he’s also remixed well known artists like afrobeat legend Dele Sosimi and grime master Trim, you might share our view of this amazingly talented and versatile producer. His “Change ur ways” EP for Heist is soulful, jazzy, deep and energetic with three varied originals and a classic soulful house remix by man of the moment, NDATL label head Kai Alcé.
