Eleanor and Llywelyn

A descendent of the Wright Brothers, Richard Larsen took piano lessons starting at age 7. His Belgian Conservatory teacher, Simone De Belve, was Resident at the Chicago Conservatory of Music. At age 12 he performed with the Chicago Civic Orchestra, a Schumann concerto. But all that training for performance left a gap in composition. He started to play music to pictures in magazines and drove family crazy with his tonal experiments.

Considering Juilliard, having a personal recommendation with the director of the Chicago Conservatory, Dr. Rudolf Ganz (Ravel, Liszt, Bartok) he instead was drawn to study Architecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago, a protege of futurist Stanley Tigerman.

During his formative improvisational years he played in jazz and blues bands, folk artists, and was in the first rock opera with William (Bill) Russo (Columbia College's Center for New Music) and the Chicago Free Theater, in Civil War and Liberation. It was one of the first politically charged multimedia pieces for soloist, chorus, dancers, and rock band.

Richard also shared several shows with Muddy Waters and recorded at Universal Studios Chicago. The club scene in Chicago was the source of historically significant rock and blues interplay. Richard also did shows with folk artists Bonnie Kolak and Jim Glover.

A refugee from the eclectic Chicago scene, Richard came to Los Angeles to work as a house producer at Quango Records. He also worked with noted acid house producer DJ Krust on the "Konkrete Jungle" Compilation on Ultra Records, and did the Tulku remixes released on Triloka Records.

Delphine Simonis of LA’s KPFK calls The Mighty One aka Richard Larsen, “a cross between Mark Farina, Amon Tobin, J.S. Bach and Anouar Brahem, all in one. Trained in the classics, Rachmaninoff and Orbit, Richard Larsen's program is hardly retro”.

As a member of trip hop collective UNA, Richard Larsen continues to release forward-looking sound and music.
