ASA-CHANG is the founder and original bandmaster of Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, who, upon leaving the ensemble in the early nineties, formed ASA-CHANG & Junray with programmer and guitarist Hidehiko Urayama. Now, the eccentric duo is accompanied by violinist Anzu Suhara. Named after their unique Jun-Ray Tronics, ASA-CHANG & Junray's band name also means 'pilgrimage', which makes sense; back from a pandemic-driven hiatus, they return to take music to places it has never been before.

About
Starting her musical adventure at just 14 years old with concerts in Ramallah and Cairo, Nai Barghouti grew up to be an exceptional virtuosa, performing at renowned venues and theaters around the globe. Drawing from Arab legendary singers - as well as tapping into blues, jazz, classical Indian and Brazilian music - she developed her own unique vocal technique NaiStrumentation: a layered ornamental technique for using the voice as a musical instrument. 

Founded in 1988, Amsterdam Sinfonietta consists of 23 top-level musicians who play together as one. Over the years, the orchestra has developed into the premier string orchestra of the Netherlands and a world-class ensemble, continuously championing innovating its genre.

Zwangere Guy performed live at TivoliVredenburg's Ronda during Le Guess Who? 2021 on the night before a new lockdown hit The Netherlands, mid-festival. You can now listen to three tracks of the performance: 'Beter Leven', 'Wie is Guy?', and 'RAF (Rien à Foutre)' from his 2019 debut album.

Throughout his critically acclaimed fifteen-year career, London-based producer Ryan Lee West has reinvented himself with each lauded release. His work is bound, however, by his increasing drive to humanize sound. His music has evolved from his challenging early electronic output to more conceptual and metamorphic sonic theses, such as 2020’s ‘Articulation’ and last year’s ‘Overflow’- an emotional exploration of technological advance’s consequences to human nature. 2022 saw his much-awaited return with his eighth release via Erased Tapes, titled ‘Now Is’.

About:
Noori's musical journey began far before Ostinato Records scouted his mysterious band in late 2021. In the nineties, the then eighteen-year-old came across a guitar neck in Port Sudan. Forging it with the vintage tambour his father had gifted him, he created the electrified tambo-guitar. Ever since, Noori has used his creation to uplift the ever-resilient Beja community, whose long history is rife with oppression from the Sudanese government. Their album 'Beja Power!' is the Beja people's first international musical encounter, and, with Ostinato Records, Noori & His Dorpa Band have created a moving, necessary archive of the radiance in resistance.

Le Cri du Caire perform live at Le Guess Who? 2023 following the release of their self-titled debut album.

About:
Singer, writer, poet, and expressionist Abdullah Miniawy became, in the wake of the revolution, an artistic emblem for Egypt’s agitated youth. Alongside Peter Corser on the saxophone and Karsten Hochapfel on the cello, he is sure to grip audiences as Le Cri du Caire. Blending rock, jazz, sprinkles of oriental flourishes, spoken word, and Sufi poetry and philosophy, the three-piece adorn each room they play in with a rich metaphorical universe transcending identities and borders. Their self-titled debut, released in January, serves as a sample of what can be achieved on the stage.

Georgia's Pankisi Ensemble perform live at Le Guess Who? 2023 as part of the Hidden Musics program. 

About:
The Pankisi Ensemble goes against the typical 'ethno-fusion' grain in two ways. First, by not restricting tradition to a putrid, embalmed state, but by allowing their experimentation to take them to new grounds; secondly, by not letting go of their integrity. The women’s ensemble was founded by musician and folk music researcher Bela Mutoshvili. The group let the world in on vocal and instrumental practices of Chechen music, seldom ever heard by outsiders. Additionally, they borrow from the sound of various Georgian territories, making them a moving mosaic of the Caucasus region’s varied culture.

Anglo-French avant-pop group Stereolab have been hailed as one of the most influential and fiercely independent groups of the 90s. As one of the guest curators of Le Guess Who? 2023, the group performed as closing act of the festival.

About
Long captivated by Jaar’s music, Ali Sethi found a space in their collaboration for sonic exploration that seduces, challenges and redefines identities. Composer and performer Sethi blends traditional South Asian melodies with global beats and is known for reviving the ghazal, an ancient poetic form that was taken by Sufi mystics from the Arab world to Persia and throughout the Indian subcontinent. Nicolás Jaar’s abstract productions span shades of pop, ambient, noise and club music and converge with Sethi’s world in their collaborative project ‘Intiha’ (2023). Rooted in improvisation, the album composition was initiated by Sethi, vocalizing over samples from Jaar’s album ‘Telas’. Urdu poems drift through weightless, time-bending productions, at times floating in ambient abstraction, at times bouncing over syncopated bass and traditional Indian rhythms.

Selda Bağcan is a legendary Turkish singer and political activist. Her first singles, about political struggle and the demands of the working class, sold over 1 million copies. Selda’s psychedelic interpretations of traditional Turkish folk music and her political views have lost Selda her passport and caused her to be repeatedly imprisoned during the 70s and 80s.

As main guest of Le Guess Who? Festival 2014, Selda gave an equally joyous as emotional performance. St. Vincent and tUnE-yArDs, both admirers of the singer, performed before she took the stage. "The iconic Turkish protest singer convinced a room full of people, to dance, hug, and cry. If that’s not festival magic, I don’t know what is." - MTV Iggy

Bulgarian women's choir Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares performed music from their new album 'BooCheeMish' live at Le Guess Who? 2017, in Utrecht's iconic Dom church (dating back to the 13th century & The Netherlands' first Gothic church). The performance was curated by Perfume Genius for the festival.

About:
The famous Bulgarian women's choir Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares ('Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices') is comprised of 22 members. Performing in traditional clothing, the varying voices of the choir weave together in a serene manner, forming cunningly complex arrangements. The ensemble originated in 1952 (as The Bulgarian State Television Female Vocal Choir), and has since been performing ancient Bulgarian folk songs which, thanks to the innovative vocal use, conjure melodies that take you across time and space.

Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares will release their new album 'BooCheeMish' this spring, featuring Lisa Gerrard from Dead Can Dance. Their performance at Le Guess Who? marked the premiere of these works in The Netherlands.

It's kind of funny how one of Mario Batkovic's most well-known pieces is called Restrictus, as ‘restricting’ is quite the opposite of his enthralling mastery of the accordion. The Switzerland-based, Bosnia-born musician reaches a vast musical range with his instrument, rivalling the great minimalist composers of our modern age.

Mario Batkovic - Restrictus

After eight decades of triumph and tragedy, Brazilian protest singer Elza Soares is lauded as queen of samba and a powerful voice against repression and injustice relating to gender, race, sexual orientation and class. 

At Le Guess Who? 2016, Soares gave a powerful performance, presenting work from her 34th album, The Woman at the End of the World, for which Soares left her hometown of Rio de Janeiro to collaborate with key players from São Paulo’s samba sujo (‘dirty samba’) scene. Together they made a masterpiece of 21st century Brazilian music that draws as much from avant-garde, rock, noise, jazz, soul, dub, funk as samba’s oral history. On top, Elza sings, spits and screams tales of a life in Brazil that is anything but a tropical paradise.
