Spine blind.
Roots told.
Fly drowned.
Fields molten.

Tired of feeling everything, the lake takes no more prisoners.

May ancient wars travel your brow,
May the skulls of jaguars, call you 
    with their emperors,
Green nerves, liquid tesseracts, goodness spooling--

May you wake
Bellied, deserted.
Years gathered.
Feet mended.
Being stilled.
Guardian howled.

Emerge from the milky eye.
Held as you are by no one in particular, loose in the hands.

I composed this piece for the International Contemporary Ensemble during their residency at Columbia College Chicago. Chrome Fire is for string quartet and piano and is mainly through composed with small aleatoric section using box notation. The work is a study of my own concepts of "intervallic stacking" and quintal harmony. At moments of arrival you will hear, in quarter note triplet form, stacks of perfect fourths, perfect fifths, major sevenths and at the ending minor ninths.

Desertification is an ecological process which results in the growth of the desert at the expense of healthy soil, and to me is intertwined with poor land management and climate change. 

Abstractly, the piece also explores the feeling of being uprooted and adapting to loss. I love the title of The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera, although I do not love the book itself. However, I often thought of this phrase while writing the music because it expresses both the tenuousness and heaviness of life. 

Desertification evokes the arid soundscape of the desert with all its dust and sand. Hazy, brushy, and constantly shifting, the timbral world of this piece seeks beauty even in the loss of fertility.
