Digital ambient field recordings

(Part of a group of soundworks produced for the Unnoticed Art Festival, Netherlands 16/17 May 2014)

These soundworks are to be carried through public spaces and reproduced using small speakers and digital players concealed in briefcases, backpacks, pockets etc. 

Each soundwork has a description as its title which will be used to determine a specific kind of location. The recordings are of sites located in other countries, cities, and at other times, and should be reproduced at a 1:1 scale, a natural level. 

The reproduced sound will become relatively camouflaged, in sonic terms and, as it moves through the sites, become 'invisible' at times, even to the volunteer carrying the work: at these points of ‘invisibility’ the works will have achieved their aim and will have become entirely ‘embedded’ in their transposed context. 

Routes/modes/duration of performance at volunteers’ discretion. Soundworks can be looped, if required. All files are downloadable in MP3 format, and are compatible with iTunes and most digital audio players.

These ‘performed’ soundworks engage with ideas around transmission, reception (and perception), dislocation, both temporal and spatial, as well as scale, notions of fixed installation, our relationship to our soundscape and the performative potential of ambient sound.
