Just in time for summer, Sol Power Sound is proud to present its 4th release, the Djidjo Vide EP, a 1-2 punch of Afro house by label heads, the Sol Power All-Stars. 

Djidjo Vide, the title track on the A-side, features DC (via Togo) Afrobeat band, Elikeh. It’s  a vibey slice of propulsive Afro house about finding joy in the face of hardship. Massama Dogo’s commanding vocals (sung in Mina) combined with the driving bass line, and aggressive horns (performed by DC’s Sticky Bear) make Djidjo Vide a summer sure shot for a roof-top jam, beachside dance floor, or nightclub near you.    

The B-side, Tell Me Why is darker and deeper, chock full of percussion, a chopped vocal sample, and in-your-face afrobeat horns (performed by Matt Rippetoe and Joe Herrera of DC’s the Harry Bells). It’s a late-night beatdown that will set things off proper in a dark room!

Since its inception in 2013, Mawimbi founders have been expanding their knowledge of lesser known and rather undiscovered musical territories thanks to chance encounters with likeminded DJs/producers, who were kind enough to put them onto a good amount of under-the-radar tropical gems.

Launched in 2017 and named after Mawimbi's bi-monthly radio show on Rinse France, the "Radio Mawimbi" compilation series is dedicated to unearthing vintage tropical gems in the form of free download edits and remixes by some of the most seasoned diggers and promising rookies of the tropical-enthusiast community!

From deep, drum-heavy workouts to essential Guinea Bissau melancholy, through remixed Beninese afrofunk and vintage South African kwaito, this second installment features the editing and remixing works of Yeahman (Frente Bolivarista), LSD (Love Saves The Day), Déni Shain (Antagana Records), Umoja, Mawimbi, ATW (Around The World), Calisto, Turbo Boom-Boom (TBB) and Midnight Ravers.

The lead single Africa Linda is taken from Gabriele Poso's album "Batik", out 25 October on vinyl LP and digital.

Future Afro-Latin jazz house from Italian master percussionist, multi-instrumentalist and composer Gabriele Poso. The entirely self-produced album features guest vocalists Nailah Porter, Nina Rodriguez, Quetzal Guerrero & Sofia Rollo.

Following a long-term collaborative partnership with Osunlade / Yoruba Records, as well as albums on BBE and Agogo Records, on 'Batik' Poso further develops and matures his sound - exploring his extensive roots in Afro-Cuban percussion, while delving into the realms of jazz and soulful house. 

With mixing by renowned Spanish DJ and producer Kiko Navarro, the lead single “Africa Linda” is an up tempo live take on Latin house, featuring American-born soul singer Quetzal Guerrero on vocals. 

Much of the album features Poso on not only vocals but many of the instruments - including percussion, guitar and kalimba. A true multi-instrumentalist, Poso found a particular affinity for percussion at a young age, studying in Puerto Rico and Cuba.

For this new release we asked Bosq to explain a bit more about the project behind it: It feels kind of poetic that this record, the first one I started fresh when me and my wife moved to Colombia, happened to drop exactly 3 years to the day that we first arrived here with a few suitcases and two duffle bags filled with music gear. It certainly wasn’t the plan to wait three entire years to start releasing projects in our new home, but at the same time I really didn’t want to rush it. Working with teachers and musicians here directly has helped me so much in terms of understanding local rhythms and styles but there is also a certain amount of ambient absorption that happens with music just like it does with language, and a lot of that cannot be rushed! There is also the relationships and connections you build with collaborators that really can’t be forced, and to me you can hear the difference between a one off session with someone you sent the files to online vs. people you work with continuously and spend time with... 
I met the crew from La Bogota Orquesta Afrobeat after seeing them live here in Medellín and we clicked right away because they all have great taste in music and are good people too. I went to Bogota with the Rumbero instrumental basically as it is now but without horns (have to shout out Max Perez Coymat for his guitar work on that, he has a great understanding of Disco & Funk styles which is harder to find here than in the US) and Beto who laid down the Djembe including that wicked solo in the middle. 
We recorded horns on I think 4 tracks that day in their studio, Mambo Negro Records and I’ve been back a bunch of times since as well. They are also the ones who put me in touch with Nidia. 
Something that I really respected about Nidia is that she wanted to meet up and talk about the project before agreeing to work on it, we talked about music and the track but much more so about politics and human rights. I was nervous and still embarrassed about my Spanish but it was clear we saw eye to eye on things and Rumbero was born! 
Corazon was a lot more of a solitary effort in terms of the music since I played everything, but it was really dope to work with Camilo again after having remixed a track for Mr Pauer featuring his vocals a few years back. I love that his style falls somewhere between an MC, classic roots reggae, dancehall, and even salsero at times. He’s super dynamic and writes really well too. I want to include what he wrote about his lyrics as well (especially helpful if you don’t speak Spanish) “This lyric focuses on keeping love in your heart and staying connected with nature and its many teachings. We are part of nature as it is within us and all around us. The bomba rhythm really transported me to my childhood home town of Utuado, Puerto Rico where I was surrounded by nature. Love is when you can nurture yourself and connect with your source which is our amazing planet. From there everything manifests the way it should. Keep love in your heart and you will see!”

PREMIERE: Bosq ft. Nidia Góngora - Rumbero

Afriquoi are back with their ‘Time is a Gift Which We Share All the Time’ EP. Taken from a line from the track ‘Ndeko Solo’, the title is a reminder of the blessedness of being alive and the intimate connection of all things.

This is the first EVER Afriquoi release where the whole band has gone into the studio to record a full live-band sound, playing together at Octagon Studios, putting down songs that were written collaboratively and honed over years on live stages. It was recorded with the assistance of Tom Excell (Nubiyan Twist, Onipa) to help capture the right live sound.

More than any of Afriquoi’s previous releases, this EP allows each member’s individual sound and talent to shine: Jally Kebba Susso’s exquisite kora playing, Fiston Lusambo’s intricate Congolese guitar, uplifting vocals from Andre Espeut, crisp percussion from André Marmot, tasteful chords from Nico Bentley and beats from Oli Cole.

Guitarist Fiston Lusambo explains: “we wanted to create a style of music which does not exist yet by combining Congolese guitar, Gambian kora, African Djembe and mixing them with European music… this EP is a result of our work where each of us has put his talent in it, we think we have now something which is what we wanted”.

Parisian label Mawimbi are the perfect match for the band, having established themselves as champions of afro-tinged electronic music , through their long-running nights in Paris, their DJ sets, their label releases and their own productions and remixes for the likes of Oumou Sangaré, Femi Kuti, Cerrone & more.
