I've debated with myself for a long time about putting some stuff I recorded as a younger lad with my friends up on the web for anyone to hear. This just seems like the right place for it.

    My name is Derick. Hi. I'm a musician. In the late 90's in Farmington, NM my friends and I played a lot of music together. Pretty unorganized group of people we were, actually. Nine or ten people over maybe 6 years mixing genres and influences together. Every different combination of people created music unique enough to be a different "band", yet none of the "bands" were ever taken seriously by its own members. As a whole, we were known locally by the name Killpop, which was intended to become our little indie record label. Kids with dreams, we were. 
   
    We never settled on line-ups, band names, song titles... hell we never really wrote songs. In fact, aside from a few exceptions, we were mostly improv musicians. 90% of our original music started out of thin air. "Jamming". There is this feeling you can get from improvising that I never really got from playing covers or original music; where you practice songs over and over until you can't stand them. I once heard that old Jazz musicians called this trance-like feeling "getting there". Scientifically, I think it's the brain releasing endorphins and dopamine. And like most things, when you do it enough you are bound to stumble onto something memorable, maybe even something good enough to build an actual song out of. 
    
    Then sometimes, as a band, you create something that is so weird and in the moment that attempting to re-create it seems pointless. Which brings me to this "song". I feel I must stress again that this is improvised completely, because thinking otherwise should require totally different expectations from the listener. This isn't a song. It's just music. Recorded in a basement on a well-placed 80's boombox, but an old tape; it was the first time this line-up played together.

    I know I hear this stuff differently than everyone else. I enjoy listening to it probably more than anyone else. Being a part of it and knowing the people involved will do that. To me, it's a polaroid picture with weird stuff happening in the background, that's hard to explain, and reminds me of a fun portion of my life.
