About the song: 
Inspired by a friend losing her cigarettes at the beach, this song uses the metaphor of cigarettes to explore themes of attachment and longing. It’s about the addictive nature of relationships and the quiet comfort of being needed. It was written with help from Jenny Lederer as we both ignored our friend mumbling under her breath "if i were my cigarettes where would i be..." in favor of writing annoying couplets starting the same way. So it goes.
