Just after Christmas December 1993 I did what turned out to be my last radio show for over 10 years. As Head of Programmes & Music I was never a regular GEM-AM presenter but fancied a 'fun afternoon' so put myself on this show, knowing there were few ads, and I could play a LOT of Music and of course those fabulous JAM and PAMS JINGLES! I recorded it in the studio so it's reasonable quality, and with hindsight I should of course have told myself off for playing rather too many jingles ~ but HEY it was a fun 3 hours on a station I loved! From 1973 onwards all UK 'Independent Local Radio' stations commissioned custom jingle packages as the Musician's Union regulations forbade using US companies or buying another station's backing tracks. London record companies realised they could make jingles (and get publicity) by having the singer re-sing over their latest release with a lyric about the radio station. The most used one at Metro was by Stephanie DeSykes on her 'Born with a smile on my face' hit. We called these 'sing-overs' and Metro had about forty sent between '74 and '76. This 'fad' died out when radio stations realised it was more about promoting the song than the station name.

Now legendary Dallas writer/singer Chris Kershaw composed and produced a whole package for the William B. Tanner company in the early 1970s - a custom for WCOD Cape Cod, Mass.  The tracks of 'Simple & Free' are now sung by TM for iJingles and and with stalwart Dallas singer Kay Sharpe doing the solo one cut been rejuvenated for the oldies station Solid Gold Gem AM. On 5th November 2012 solidgoldgem.am launched on the internet to the world.  Playing music from the 40s to the 80s we needed a powerful news jingle for our hourly bulletins, and chose what we believe is the best News jingle from any jingle company from the last 20 years. It brought together over 100 years of radio production/music experience of its creators, They were Jon Wolfert of JAM Dallas,  and the legendary Tom Merriman (now sadly deceased) who was  part of TM Productions back in its heyday. The cut was custom made for WABC New Radio New York, and our 'Radio Like It Used To Be' line fits perfectly.
