AN AFRO DANCE MANIFESTO: LISTEN TO LEN LEISE’S NEW VINYL-ONLY MIX

Beginning his 2015 with a self-released edits EP that immediately sent the ‘wants’ to ‘haves’ on Discogs into the stratosphere, Melbourne-based record collector and producer Len Leise has dropped a stunning 75-minute “afro dance” manifesto for our latest vinyl-only mix.

With his new mini-LP Lingua Franca on International Feel catapulting him to the top of every Balearic head’s End Of Year list, this new mix digs around the roots of the record in a little more detail, pulling out the Nigerian boogie bombs and odd-ball fashion funk 12″s that never leave his record bag.

Assembled from the rare (he was willing to swap a copy of his coveted Edits to get hold of one) and the not so rare, it’s a journey that reflects the wanderings of Lingua Franca, taking you down river on a raft of shimmering synths and percussive grooves.

One side of Lingua Franca was heavily influenced buy the afro disco and funk that I regularly DJ out. It happens a lot that what I DJ in turn comes back into my music in some subtle way. So this being a more uptempo mix is more of a representation of what it’s like to hear me DJ out, the tracks I love to play whilst paying homage to some of the tracks that helped shape and inspire Lingua Franca. Particularly the B-side.

Number 018 is a collaboration between Christopher Rau & Hakim Murphy. During the many times that they have met, the topic of politics always came up in conversation. With all the problems in the world, the title of the 12” was formed: Geopolitical Problems Yet to be Solved. This four track EP symbolizes the differences of the world culture’s with its diverse track selection. Liquid synths, bouncing percussion, and variety of feels really describe this project. The problems of the world will never be solved but this is their take on what the problems sound like.

Efdemin has all but perfected his deep, expertly reduced take on house and techno. The German artist has mastered his form over the course of numerous 12”s on various labels, including three albums on Dial Records. They are intricate, mind bending affairs that take you in on yourself and constantly explore new ground. His hybrid mix CD on his own Naïf imprint and Curle last year was another career high point, and recently he has turned himself towards experimental and microtonal composition with yet more fascinating results. February 2019 will see Ostgut Ton release New Atlantis, his latest album and one inspired by Francis Bacon’s unfinished 17th century novel of the same name. Promising to fuse his left-of-centre take on dance music with a new found passion for experimental sound art, it’s the latest chapter in a fascinating artistic story. 

His podcast for us is a decidedly club-focussed mix, featuring the sort of warped synths and underlapping grooves you would expect of the man. There are multi-layered tracks of percussion, sound design and stringy rhythms to start, then things slip into long, draw out passages of tunnel vision techno before the drums begin to hit harder to carry you home. At times playful, at others deadly serious, it sums up the career of Efdemin perfectly.

SYGMATURE 1 is a compilation of modern atmospheric music, a milestone of radio.syg.ma’s year of existence. Twenty two international artists, musicians and producers who contributed to the radio took part in this release.

Featured artists present different styles and approaches to recording soundscapes, inspired by experimental ambient, field recordings, electroacoustic, musique concrète and low-fi electronics. Sounds and atmospheres they create range from futuristic, distorted or high-pitched to more meditative and somewhat esoteric.

This mix by Berghain / Panorama Bar resident @Efdemin aka Phillip Sollmann first aired on August 3 as part of @OstgutTon-official's takeover of @RinseFM and @Rinse-France. For this special simulcast on both stations in Paris and London, Ostgut Ton artists were asked to showcase a different musical side of theirs.

Phillip Sollmann: “For this mix I've picked out a handful of records that have been important to me recently or since a very long time. It's about various times and places, now rhythmic, then rather quiet. I hope that my musical output as Efdemin better translates through this compilation of influential music, rather than for instance through interviews. Happy listening.”
