Michael Vater, better known in music circles as Phonique, has carved out a rich niche for himself in the crowded world of electronic music. Widely regarded as one of the nicest guys in the scene, Vater has come a long way from his humble beginnings in Cologne, fully establishing himself as both a father of the Berlin club scene and a much loved ambassador for house and electronic music all around the world. With way over 100 releases and his own boutique house label Ladies & Gentlemen, Phonique has taken his signature grooves all over the world - more than 50 countries at last count. 

With countless production and remix credits plus three full albums under his belt, 'Saudade (Best Of Phonique)' is a timely reminder of what makes this artist such a treasure. With so much material to get through it's a wonder he managed to keep it to 11 tracks. 

Long time collaborator Erlend Øye features twice as a guest vocalist - 'For the Time Being' and 'Casualties' both being essential reference points in Phonique's back catalogue. Originally released in 2005, 'For the Time Being' could be the blueprint for many of today's nu-disco producers, while Antonio Eudi and Bruno Be's Remix of 'Casualties' shares a similar, lush and rolling groove - both are classic Vater - melancholic and uplifting at the same time. 

Another landmark collaboration in Vater's discography was with Ian Whitelaw, whose sublime vocals feature on 'Our Time Our Chance' and 'You That I'm With'. Originally released on Phonique's first album 'Identification' in 2004, 'You That I'm With' is a gorgeous slice of electronic synth pop, while 'Our Time Our Chance' from 2010 is more focused on the deeper reaches of the dance floor, and was widely regarded as one of the tracks of that year. 

Elsewhere on 'Saudade', (Portuguese for a brooding kind of melancholy, and a suitable description of Vater’s signature sound), Phonique continues to display his passion for collaboration with talented vocalists. 'One Step 2010' and 'Feel What You Want' highlight the divine sound of Rebecca while 'Endless Love' showcases Louie Austen - whose 'Glamour Girl' is also included via Phonique's Original Version. His deft touch for creating affecting and beautiful electronic pop music with strong links to the dance floor is fully in evidence on every track, and non more so than his rework of 'Ornette's Crazy' - a huge hit in 2012 on Get Physical that still sounds as thrilling today as it did the day of release. 

Probably the most straight up dance floor track here is 'Divertimento' - a deep burner with slight Latin swing to it - no doubt a result of Phonique's strong links to the underground scene in Brazil.

James Curd is back on Exploited. 
This time James hooked up with Fred Everything from Montreal. 
Together they are Jimmy & Fred who offer the indie-sounding, oldschool disco infused track I SEE LIGHTS (alongside a massive remix by Karmon), that is sure to tempt the ears of many. 

Fred is a key player in the world of house music and with 13 years in the music business and over 100 productions to his credit, he shows no sign of stopping. 
In the early 90s, he started playing live in raves and clubs in Canada. He was then known as “Everything,” because his live sets could range anywhere from techno to house, ambient and even drum and bass. 
Tired of carrying his equipment around, mainly a TR909 and a SH101, he started DJ’ng and changed his name to Fred Everything. 
James Curd began his DJing career in Chicago when he was only fifteen years old. Being underage, Curd was snuck into events to play at raves and clubs he was not legally allowed in. He played along side some of electronic’s most respected acts and DJs. 
As ‘Greenskeepers’ Curd released an array of music on Derric Carter’s Classic Records. He made his mark on the dance music world by infusing swing music and Chicago house to invent the term G-Swing, being short for Greenskeepers Swing. Around this time he also started a record label by the name ‘Greenskeepers Music’. 
Under his solo name James Curd released on DFA, Permanent Vacation, Eskimo and Bang Gang to name a few. He has remixed Hercules & Love Affair, Juan Maclean, Groove Armada, Poolside, Flight Facilities and DJ CAM.
