Scene 1: On the Train, and meeting Tad-cu.
Awel gets the train to the Welsh countryside to meet her Tad-cu (Grandad). At the station she is a little bored and throws a paper-aeroplane in the air that is caught by her grandad (theme played by the bass clarinet).

Out walking with her tad-cu (grandad), Awel shows her skills on a skateboard, gets followed by some curious ducks and then spots kites and hand-gliders flying in the sky.

Scene 3: In the Libary; Scene 4: Building the Dragon.
Starting with a fantasy sequence in the library as Awel researches gliders and things that fly, starting with a curious bee... This moves into a new scene (a waltz)as Awel and her Tad-cu (Grandad) build a Dragon for a carnival out of bamboo and gaffer-tape.

Scene 5: The night before the Carnival. 
Awel looks out of the window and starts to dream of the Carnival that is come. Jugglers, knife-throwers, snake-charmers all appear. She is woken suddenly from her reverie as it begins to rain.

Scene 7: Snatching Sheep and Police Chase
A peaceful hillside in Wales with sheep grazing. The freed Dragon-glider swoops down and snatches a sheep from the hillside. Two police officers are putting out cones on a road when the Dragon swoops down and chases them away.

The rain and wind slowly pick up and become a raging storm. Awel and her Tad-cu desperately try to save their Dragon Float, but it breaks free and is carried into the air.

Scenes 9 and 10: Awel stares out of the window and recalls the events of the evening. The people of the town are cross and demand that the Dragon is found and destroyed. Awel goes into the woods to look for it and finds it trapped in the ruins of an old church.

When The Dragons Came Back to Wales: Scenes 9 and 10

The final scene: Awel has released the Dragon back into the 'wild' but she is in trouble and is sent to bed by her Tad-cu. Time passes and the story of the Dragon makes the news. The sun rises above the Welsh hillside and not one, but multiple Dragons appear. The story has inspired people up and down Wales to release their own dragons into the sky. The dragons have come back to Wales. The scene ends as Awel says goodbye to her Tad-cu and goes home.

When the Dragons Came Back to Wales: Final scene

BBC National Orchestra of Wales conducted by Ryan Bancroft 10th May 2022 in BBC Hoddinott Hall, Cardiff. Part of Composition: Wales.
Scored for piccolo, flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets (2nd doubling bass clarinet), 2 bassoons (2nd doubling contrabassoon), 2 horns, 2 trumpets, trombone, bass trombone, tuba, timpani, 2 percussion, harp, strings.
Synopsis: It is the night before the carnival. A young girl, Awel is excited after having built a dragon float with her grandfather and can't get to sleep. She stares out of the window and begins to dream of the spectacle that is to come. She is transported into a world of her own imagination as the many colourful characters from the carnival appear, including her own beloved dragon. The scene ends as she is woken suddenly from her day-dream as outside it begins to rain. The imaginary carnival characters make a quick exit as a storm begins to brew...
