Disquiet Junto Project 0564: Octave Lept

I've been a bit obsessed about recording organ drones and then recording the stops on them as I'm reaching the limits of Garageband. Time to get onto Reaper next methinks and explore new ways of making sound pieces. But I could never tire of drone pieces, especially with organs and all the lovely overtones from the stops. Doing this Disquiet Octave Lept prompt immediately made me want to do a short homage to 'Occam XXV' by Éliane Radigue, which kind of blew my mind hearing that at the Union Chapel in London a few months ago. So here we are.

It's a very simple piece starting on the lowest C and rising to the highest 7 octaves later, overlaying the movement in the stops by recording over each part. Using Angel Numbers by bringing each new note in after 11 bars, and slightly extending by one extra bar at the very end to finishing on the 111th bar at a standard tempo of 120. To get rid of the organ clicks when the notes were struck I transferred each part to Audacity to fade in and out each note. And there's some panning throughout to spread the good around.

The one instruction for this week's Disquiet Junto assignment was to use an octave leap, which is something I quite often do anyway. 

So, I just set about writing a new track without thinking too hard about the brief. I actually started with the percussion that shows up later in the track.

The root on the opening part steps down an octave before introducing the next chord in the progression.

A two-note synth part is just the minor 7 on two octaves (with a major 6 once for colour - still fits the Dorian mode but is pretty HELLO when it shows up imo).

A second synth part doubles the guitar harmonic sounds, coming in via an opening low-pass filter. That synth part has its pitch modulated by a little step sequence, so it steps up one or two octaves, and the rate at which that's happening in shifting about. That part then runs into a delay (Valhalla Delay) which as a descending octave shift in the feedback patch.

A synth bass part arrives later that is just sustained notes following the root of each chord, but an arpeggiator steps up and down an octave. Kind of like with the pitch modulation on the other synth, the tempo of the arpeggiator is being modulated by an LFO, then quantised, to make it less synth disco / Girls & Boys.

I used a track on which I was already working on and added automatic tools to randomly add or substract up to two octaves to all tracks. The probability was chosen so that the octave jumps should go unnoticed.

Quite minimal, just two small virtual modular patches and a couple of effect plugins. Opens with some ambience from Voltage Modular plus a small addition of Valhalla Supermassive. Then the paperweights, made in VCV Rack and distorted by Wasted Space from Softube and Richter from Klevgrand. As usual recorded in a single live take, a few physical controls were mapped and used but the patches for this more or less played themselves.

These crunchy texture percussive sounds are from samples provided by the Iranian artist Sote. Download and more information can be found here: https://www.ableton.com/en/blog/sote-electronic-music-iran/

To create this track, I loaded up those samples into a drum rack in Ableton and jammed with them on the Push, recording results. 

Very interesting artist and sounds. From that article: 

" ... because electronic music is largely wordless, it is widely perceived to be less of a corrupting influence on the youth of Iran and so electronic musicians are afforded a certain degree of freedom to perform, organize festivals and even tour outside of the country. In this rapidly evolving scene, Ata Etbekar aka Sote occupies a somewhat unusual position; having lived in Germany and the US for most of his life and released on labels such as Warp, Sub Rosa, and Morphine, the now Tehran-based artist is familiar with the realities of music making both inside and outside of Iran. ... The resulting unsteady rhythms, radical sound transformations and extreme timbres make for an at times challenging listen. But there is also much that is immediately rewarding, delicate and beautiful in Sote’s musical meditations on opposition and reconciliation."

2 dI 3  Hole Third (disquiet0698)

The combination of the melancholic piano riff by Leon Clowes combined with the rising tension from Marco Marongiu made me want to add some equally rising waves of noise to the mix. To do so, I employed the Soma Ether which was "driven" by the magnetic fields created by the Ferrous from Landscape which then went through the Cosmos and Zoia, fed back into each other using the Matrix from Future Sound Systems. The resultant cacophony was then imported into Logic, tamed with granular effects, and then layered beneath the Clowes/Marongui combo. I tried my best to be subtle, so hopefully I did not ruin the combo!

The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)
