Drift Mood Disquiet 0562

When I was thinking about this week's Disquiet Junto prompt, I had the oompah-pah lullaby bass pattern in my head and the idea of repeating it to fade. Improvising using five soft sounds on Garageband, I keep the wavering bum notes in the middle (that bit where you're just drifting off and be a bit startled), with the idea of returning to the plain I-V chords (E major to B major) to rock you to sleep.

Scheep Shleep (disquiet0562)

Plato had no time nor patience for anyone who enjoyed the comforts of the unconscious. “Asleep, man is useless,” he wrote. “He may as well be dead. It [is] a disgrace and unworthy of a gentleman if he devotes the whole of any night to sleep.”

René Descartes felt differently. In Discourse on Method he wrote, “Asleep we can in the same way imagine ourselves possessed of another body and that we see other stars and another earth.” Descartes may have had a point; he passed away from pneumonia due to traveling in sub-zero predawn temperatures. Legend has it that his philosophy pupil Queen Christina of Sweden was an early riser and demanded lessons at five in the morning.

Suss Müsik occasionally wakes in the wee hours at two or three in the morning, working or reading for a bit, then returning to bed a few hours later. The quality of sleep at that hour is richly luxurious, a deep enveloping wave of inanimate bliss. Upon waking, the first question that comes to mind is “What day is it?”

This piece was created to at first engage with, and then slowly disentangle, the busy rhythms of the mind. It was performed on handmade synth/MIDI devices and recorded live to 8-track. The title is derived from the part of the brain that produces melatonin.

Disquiet Junto Project 0563: Digital Magical Realism
The Assignment: What does this imaginary genre sound like?

After discarding two tracks, which where just “too magic” (https://soundcloud.com/winterer/rippling-along and https://soundcloud.com/winterer/time-drowning-mechanism, if someone is interested), I went to this one, which may have “too much realism”. The idea of Digital Magical Realism was to combine realistic field recordings that don’t match realistically, plus synths that mimic real instruments, but not realistically enough, because of … digital reasons or so.

The one instruction for this week's Disquiet Junto assignment was to use an octave leap, which is something I quite often do anyway. 

So, I just set about writing a new track without thinking too hard about the brief. I actually started with the percussion that shows up later in the track.

The root on the opening part steps down an octave before introducing the next chord in the progression.

A two-note synth part is just the minor 7 on two octaves (with a major 6 once for colour - still fits the Dorian mode but is pretty HELLO when it shows up imo).

A second synth part doubles the guitar harmonic sounds, coming in via an opening low-pass filter. That synth part has its pitch modulated by a little step sequence, so it steps up one or two octaves, and the rate at which that's happening in shifting about. That part then runs into a delay (Valhalla Delay) which as a descending octave shift in the feedback patch.

A synth bass part arrives later that is just sustained notes following the root of each chord, but an arpeggiator steps up and down an octave. Kind of like with the pitch modulation on the other synth, the tempo of the arpeggiator is being modulated by an LFO, then quantised, to make it less synth disco / Girls & Boys.

This track was inspired by the Disquiet Junto Project 0565 Musical Folly (details below):
I immediately was reminded of the Faringdon Folly Tower (see https://www.faringdonfolly.org.uk), the "last major folly to be built in England". It was commissioned by Lord Berners (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord_Berners),  the "last English eccentric" (see https://englandspuzzle.com/a-folly-a-deep-sea-diver-coloured-pigeons-the-last-english-eccentric-lord-berners/).

I wanted to present the Folly as a work of art, with no obvious use and with small eccentric details that are not visible at first sight.
