The sense of things

30/04/21 marked 136 years since Luigi Russolo was born in Portogruaro, Italy. As part of world wide celebrations my Intonarumori played a 90 minute improvised set for 3 Intonarumori and Voice. This is a small excerpt. Always found it notoriously hard to capture this band on tape live ( thats a project for next year with a really good engineer)the frequencies go right through yr blood and weird harmony appears as if by magic... on tape its a bit more of a mooshy blah!  anyeays hope u find some fun in this sonic soupy seance stuff : )

(Please note: The following description was added one day after this track was first posted, and after a few listeners had liked it. In all fairness, since the description wasn't there when those listeners liked it, it should be said that they may not necessarily agree with what I've expressed below...)

This recording was especially made as a contribution to the Northern Hemisphere's ''International' Dawn Chorus Day'. Personally, I prefer to call it 'Northern Hemisphere Dawn Chorus Day', because in the Northern Hemisphere it is Spring and the days are long, while in the Southern Hemisphere it is Autumn and the nights are long. For that reason, I would prefer to celebrate a complementary 'Southern Hemisphere Dawn Chorus Day'. The complementary polar date would be the first Sunday in November.

However, here where I live, a human-concocted curse called 'Daylight Saving' is inflicted (for human economic reasons) on much of Nature from the first Sunday of October every year until the first Sunday in April of the following year. One of the most significant consequences of this curse is that, in most places, First Light, and the Dawn Chorus (also known as The Hour of the Birds), are never truly free of the contamination of human economic activity and the vast noise that goes with it. Nature is never given time to be itself, to hear itself, except in its remotest parts (and even then, of course, there are the jets, carrying busy little humans to and fro across the skies). Even so, I believe it is good and wholesome to seek out, be immersed in, absorb, enjoy, and celebrate the dawn; and perhaps, in this way, inspire others with a sense of the importance and value of giving Nature some genuine time off from our noisy human ways. Imagine an International Day of Human Silence for Nature...

Three different moments within a quiet windless night. This is not an exceptional recording but I like the atmosphere anyway.
A howl, a fox and a blackbird can be heard as well as a frog and probably some rodents close to the tripod.
The microphones and the recorder have been left the whole night.
The photo has been shot in the morning when I came back to pick the stuff up.

Recorded with a Nagra Ares BB+, Neumann KM184, ORTF near my house, in la Creuse, France.

Rob Hordijk's module "Benjolin" represents a central sound source in this composition, whereby the sometimes "chaotic" sounds, which are created by the extraordinary circuit structure, give an idea of how uncontrollable and unpredictable not only our physical environment is, but also our own life as well as its end.
