Uncle Sam Wants you, but we the people want you too. I used to host a weekly in Pontiac called the NewYakCity Block Party. At my Kick Push (Keep it cool kid, People usually show hate) record release party, Pontiac artist Quest aka Q was in the venue that night painting on the spot. He painted this MC, and it always reminded me of the Hip Hop version of Uncle Sam wants you poster. I took a pic and sent it to Indy artist ReeseMaryam, and told her about my idea of the flag. This is how she flipped it. The Emcee is the voice of Hip Hop. Hip Hop is the VOICE of the people, from all walks of life. Sometimes we come together to have fun or create. Sometimes we organize ourselves AND GET out on the front lines with our art, our voices and our bodies TO TAKE a stand against injustices in our local and global community. The a.r.m.y. generally consists of... at risk, mostly youth. 

2. The First Draft is Born 

In The First Draft is Born, One Be Lo is calling soldiers to action, in the form of organizing and protesting due to the state of injustice in our communities around the concept of #BlackLivesMatter.

The First Draft Is BORN

Once upon a time, my brother and legendary Detroit graffiti artist Sintex painted this mural at my old studio, aka the Inklab where I lived in Inkster, Michigan. Most of the songs heard on The Original Born Ones were recorded in that booth. In 2007, our family moved to Cairo, Egypt and I relocated my studio to Pontiac, Michigan. I had to leave this piece behind but before I left, I took photos to preserve the room on my Labor album cover, in 2012. A couple years later I wanted to drive pass the Inklab to see if anybody ever moved in. As I approached the house, the back door was wide open and it appears that somebody had been squatting in the house. I went to the basement and saw how they had punched holes in all the beautiful graffiti. I got so upset I carved and ripped the graffiti off the 2x4 studs and hauled what I could back to Pontiac. This is the story of survival, and how the verses recorded in a room where a living legend painted a wall. The wall was attacked, destroyed and ripped to pieces, put back together again, and now lives to tell about it. A true survivor, still here. 

Still Here features Ka Di from Chicago on the hook. One Be Lo discusses how him and his friends used to live wild and crazy, but they survived the traps of the city, still alive. Still here. A friend gets shot in the head, but years later he's still here to raise his children and steer them away from the same drama. He mentions how the prisons are filled with brothers, fathers and uncles who may be out of site, out of mind, but they are still here. Political Prisoners still here. Injustice and racism are still here. Alive and well.

Still (Here) BORN

Long time friend and artist Quindell Mitchell aka Quest gifted me with this cardboard painting over five years ago. I knew him as an emcee, so when he returned from prison I was expecting to get him in the studio but instead, he told me that he taught himself how to paint and offered this painting as proof. He made paint brushes from the hair he found in the barbershop and painted on cardboard when he didn't have canvas. I have been holding on to this gem waiting for the right time to collab and share this story with the world. The painting contains symbols that represent oppression of speech and those who represent that oppression. This piece is dedicated to those who create new ways of expression at those times when nobody will listen to their voice. A picture can paint a thousand words.

Even fans wanna lock One Be Lo in a box, but I hold the key" 


Free Dumb is Born is about Freedom of speech and the contradictions/repercussions that come along with it. Children are taught to speak, but are not allowed to say certain things. Artists have fans, but eventually these same fans try to pigeonhole their favorite artist into a box, so they can't make the music they truly want to make without losing fans. One Be Lo also gives us a brief reminder in African American history by explaining how the same words that set you free can also get you murdered.
