In the wake of their widely-acclaimed album Union, JUNO-nominated duo Èbony rematerialize on the dancefloor with the otherworldly Shades of Meridian EP, projecting a waking futurist dream haunted by echoes of Detroit techno, Chicago house, South African melodies, and the rich mythology of Ancient Toronto. 

Opener “Break My Skin explores a hidden pocket of after-hours techno space-time with an ethereal vocal by James Baley, leading into the tense, disembodied jack of “Forever.” Next, “Dull Side First” rides a spectral break through a sepulchral warehouse trip, “RIFT” invokes peak-time witchcraft, and closer “My Daylight” entrances even the most self-possessed sound-and-lighting guys to spam the smoke machine until reality itself is occluded. 

And to those who say that working with JUNO-nominated artists proves that Turbo is just a cog in the CanCon cabal, we would like to familiarize you with the facts: Canadian Tire refused to carry our 2023 Bryan Adams remix LP and we have rejected five separate demos from Justin Trudeau’s tech-house alias “Arabian Nights.” It’s called integrity — try looking it up sometime.

Dull Side First

Flash Atkins has pulled together a crack team of musicians for Sanza Mibale Ya Bo Pemi. It is a tribute to the golden age of afro disco, when the sounds of 70s New York found their way to the continent and fused with local musical styles and rhythms.

Felix Ngindu sings in his native Lingala language from DRC over a locked bass, congas, keys, percussion, rhythm guitar and a brass section from Haggis Horn's Atholl Ransome and Malcolm Strachan. Funk, disco, soul and jazz all blend for a a peak time jam.

The Flash Dub strips things back to the rhythm section for heads down, dubby action and a tracky take that still packs a dance floor punch.

The incomparable Bosq steps up for remix duties and knocks it out the park. Layered drums and percussion give things a more latin swing before the beats break, piano enters the fray and it's a tropical funk party starter all the way.

The dub does the beat thing, rocking a hard groove for the dancers. Hands in the air? F**ck yeah!

Brazilian DJ, vinyl digger, party starter, and style icon Martha Pinel has officially joined the Toy Tonics family. Splitting her time between Rio de Janeiro and Berlin, she’s the founder of Assembleia, a laid-back Rio party that’s become a Carnival sensation, and co-founder of Croma, a music-meets-fashion project that shaped Rio’s alt-scene. Featured on the cover of GQ Brazil, she was named one of “13 artists changing the world.”
Her non-linear DJ sets fuse Afro-Brazilian rhythms, Middle Eastern grooves, Italo, disco, house, and Balearic sounds - always bold, emotional, and unpredictable. She’s played Boiler Room, Paris Fashion Week, KALA Festival, DGTL, and more, alongside names like Hunee, Antal, and Prins Thomas.
Martha’s debut EP Real Rio captures a rediscovery of her hometown—a city where beauty and chaos collide in dramatic highs and lows. The A-side opens with the title track: spacious arpeggios and dreamy textures create a soundscape that invites you to get lost in the music, a tribute to the carefree spirit of the ’90s. "Techla" follows with a more minimal, introspective vibe. Its hypnotic bassline feels like a journey into the unknown.

The B-side starts with "Somo", a bright and catchy track full of sunny melodies and feel-good energy, evoking Italo disco moods. Finally, "Flusso Libero" closes the EP with elegance and depth. It features a unique vocal sample that stands out in Feel Fly’s style, tying everything together with a nod to ’90s nostalgia.

Friday Island is back with its penultimate release of the year from cross-border prog duo Pete B & Rianu Keevs, featuring stunning remixes from Dowden and Andrés Moris. Pete and Rianu have been smashing it this year with high-charting releases on Prognosis, Critical Elements and JourneyDeep, and this release is bang on the sound we’re trying to push here at Friday Island.

First up is the original mix of ‘Unfamiliar Place’, a deep, dark and moody 4am heads-down vibe inspired by labels like Zero Tolerance and Plattenbank, combining growling bass, eerie pads and ominous vocals to devastating effect.

Next up is a remix from rising star and production genius Dowden who delivers an absolute monster of a tune, departing from his usual deep and melodic vibe with a darker mood that stays faithful to the original but adds raw, gritty bass, heavy percussion and an edgy detuned synth that absolutely slaps.

Finally, Argentinean prog producer Andrés Moris offers his interpretation – a driving, techy track that maintains the eerie, dark mood but takes us more into sci-fi territory with an aggressive robo bass and groovy drums guaranteed to lift the energy on any dancefloor.

Friday Island is a new progressive house label inspired by the magic of the early 2000s but with an eye firmly on pushing the future of the sound. Friday Island’s mission is to make music for dark sweaty rooms and those cosmic 3am dancefloor moments when you forget where you are.

Gimme Some got remixed by Brian Ring. This Berlin based Irish guy is known for his unique style somewhere between house, disco and an euphoric touch of indie dance. With his interpretation of the original version by Jakob Mäder and JULIENT, Brian twists it into a dancefloor friendly and intelligent looped club track. Either for warmup in a cozy bar setting or a hot summer night, this one got vibes: organic disco inspired drums, looped vocal snippets and this reduced melody elements from the original Gimme Some. And of course some classic Brian Ring choir synths we all love!
