West Coast producer Dave Aju introduces us to his latest musical venture with the launch of his new artist imprint Elbow Grease Records. Taking care of the inaugural release himself, on ‘X17’ Dave pays reference to the hypothetical particle and potential Fifth Force discovery, delivering a deep and soulful cosmic trip that teeters between warm and cold textures. The lead single is joined by two versions: an ambient ‘Viiibe’ mix and a stripped back ‘Rhythm Dub’, which suit different spaces and times.

Berlin’s Open Music Lab introduces Cascade, a compilation featuring some of the collective’s valued artists, created in partnership with Native Instruments

Open Music Lab recently collaborated with Native Instruments for the first time, to offer selected participants a 5-month Advanced Music Production and Artistic Development program. Focused on connecting some of Berlin’s most exciting up-and-coming producers with industry professionals from Native Instruments, the course supported artists who were already making music, but who needed guidance with their productions, career development, and performance skills in order to take their music to the next level and eventually share it with the world.

The result of this course is a deeply personal compilation, channelling a range of of emotions and touching upon intimate feelings, such as depression (“Limbo”), pain and heartbreak (“Alligator,” “flames 2 dust,” “some days life is just hard”), hope in the face of adversity (“HOPE”), or the need to be authentic and putting yourself first (“For Me”). We also find an ode to queer rave culture (“Time Melts Away”), a spontaneous jam session (“skrelly boom”), and a groovy and hypnotic techno track (“NADA-R”) dedicated to early mornings after a rave or before work.

As is usual on OML’s releases, Cascade draws from a very wide range of electronic genres, produced by both longtime community members, some of which have already released on the label, as well as newcomers to the community. Cascade comes a few months after the release of Diffraction, produced after an 8-month Intermediate Production and Artistic Development course, and including first-released tracks from some of OML’s community members.

In the early 90s, Joi Lau was working as a comic assistant when he got signed by a record label in Hong Kong. Under the moniker Joey Lau, his debut album went gold and sold over 25000 copies. Fast forward to 2021 and you'd be forgiven for scratching your head at the transformation Joi has undergone. Joi's album served as his only release up until he met Klasse Wrecks' Mr. Ho 30 years later in a nightclub in downtown Hong Kong. At 8 tracks '3 UR MIND' is only a micro-selection of Joi's immense back catalogue of work, a body of songs that is impossible to locate within a normal field of genres and classification. At times tribal and at times progressive, Joi's music is a patchwork of modern and sharp percussion, sinister bass and traditional eastern motifs, resulting in a style that sounds like a representation of life in busy and hectic Hong Kong. Although his pop star days are behind him, Joi has never stopped making music. With close to one hundred tracks waiting to see the light of day, we can only look forward to another exciting chapter to the intriguing story of Joi Lau.
