GUN (Grim Up North), the new alias of Newcastle mainstay Peter Wilson, debuts on Me Me Me with 'The Reef' EP. Over many years as People Get Real, Wilson has established himself as one of house and disco's most assured and accomplished DJ and production duos. He has played at various major clubs and festivals globally, has served up a wealth of club-ready weapons on his co-founded Join Our Club label, and now branches out with something just as vital under the new alias, GUN. The opening salvo also features remixes from REES & Sahar, Fall Forward & Grainger and Kiaki. The latter one streaming with us today.

The Reef

Premiere: GUN - Boput (Kiaki Remix) [Me Me Me]

Number nine of Funnuvojere’s catalogue is signed by label founder Massimiliano Pagliara, and comes as a collaboration with CockTail d’Amore resident Luigi Di Venere. Banana Moon is the name of their duo, an acronym born on a summer night walk in the south of Italy, hinting as well to the legendary 1970s Florentine Rock Club. Delphinium Blue is the title of this debut EP. A flower favoured by Derek Jarman, it evokes feelings of joy and warmth, urging us to open to new experiences. The Italo proto-house Tie Me Up sounds like a demand. An unorthodox arpeggio drives the slinky rhythm, crowded by luxurious vocals flared by cheeky claps.
Breaks, a funky bass and a joyous organ characterize the Chicago neoclassic Full Service, making us the wish for a crowded dance floor under the light of the moon.
On the flip the tittle track Delphinium Blue (Kabuki Mix) is a theatre of sounds inspired by Detroit techno, a genre much esteemed by Banana Moon. This track evokes a sweaty warehouse on fire with hedonistic pleasures. A proud nightingale discusses harmony with a 303 while exquisitely crafted drum patterns build up to a technologic Samba. Closing the EP Polyamory sings to interspecies love, leading us for a swim in the blue depths grasping the tail of a playful whale. While the track’s title dreams of unlimited summer love, this song confirms the duo’s unconditional passion for the Italo groove.

PREMIERE : Secret Witness - More For Us

Norwegian producer and now farmer Kamuflars continues his fine run of form with two bouncing Balearic dub house cuts on Mhost Likely Green and Jungelen. Remixes from Tom Manzarek and Telephones complete this vital package. Kamuflars is the Jungelen label and party resident known for his eclectic electronic sounds. He makes a distinctive brand of Norwegian funk that has won him plenty of acclaim in the European press. Whilst the fast-rising artist's last release on Mhost Likely took a more experimental broken beat approach, this new EP has you jumping in no time. The skippy and bright beats, heavy basslines and luscious synth patterns of excellent opener ‘Kveldsol’ (which translates to evening sun) invite you on a tipsy trip to the beach at sundown. Next to that is the deliciously dub-heavy ‘The Things That Swings’ which does just what it says on the tin with luminous synth work adding to the bouncy yet dreamy atmosphere. Berlin-based Norwegian and cult producer Telephones's remix of ‘Kveldsol’ is perfectly breezy for the early morning hours. He has re-recorded some of the 606-drums and added Balearic elements through live recordings. As he perfectly describes it: “Pseudo-Balearic, Strictly Rhythm, after-hours party-vibes. Evening sun on Fløyen and view from the Sotra bridge with sea gust in the hair”. Finishing off is Plaisance Records man and South of France dub don Tom Manzarek. His Dub Remix of 'Things That Swings' is another of his superbly downtempo soundscapes complete with Zouk-inspired sounds. This is another hugely charismatic selection of sounds from Mhost Likely Green and Jungelen.

PREMIERE : Kamuflars - The Things That Swings

When I realised that every word is just an extension of a previous that has met its end, it seemed inconceivable to me that anyone could ever reach a place where they felt content with language. That is to say language as an emotive driving force, language as a pendulum that swings between a predetermined pool of words, ones that morph in shape and sound but rarely in meaning. Naturally, this meant that every word also has its upper and lower limits, suspended like a tightrope between the factions of time. For example, the word ‘happy’ has a limited life span until it inevitably becomes ‘ecstatic’; ‘ecstatic’ only exists insofar until it transforms into ‘euphoric’. Imagine if we consistently reduced the ranges of these words until we only had a few to describe everything around us. Which would you choose?

Egyptian-Australian based producer and DJ Moktar is one of those artists for which language never suffices. Instead, his music requires spiritual and personal attention as you find yourself flooded with a wave of visceral emotion through the lens of leftfield techno and IDM. The same goes for his third musical offering, a self-titled EP coming via Mall Grab's Steel City Dance Discs.

Following his inaugural single 'Silk' and then 'Lemon' is no easy feat, but the emotionally-charged 'Drip' is ripe with warm pads and a quavering gentle high-synth line that highlights Moktar's versatility, not only as a producer but also as an artist. 'Drip' is imbued in the same sensibility as the rest of the EP, one which celebrates his Arabic heritage and culture after having spent years facing stereotyping and racism in so-called Australia. Defined by his beautifully crafted intersections between future club music and traditional Arabic instrumentation and sampling, Moktar represents an artist who has now reached a point where he feels comfortable moving around freely, physically and spiritually. 'Drip' is a welcome pause amongst the organised chaos of the rest of the high-energy EP. It is a call to reflect on the moods and feelings that he has so carefully embedded in the EP, and an invitation to follow your true self.

Cocktail D'Amore know a thing or two about party starting wild cards, and thus far Lion's Drums has proven to be adept in that department with drops on Hivern Discs and his own self-titled label. He comes to the Cocktail party with two edits of Manos Tsangaris' powerful drum sermons - visceral percussive flurries from a man with enough rhythm to partake in the lauded Drums Off Chaos project. You should have a good idea from that what these two tracks are about - heavy, physical tracks for maximum dance induction, moments of pure abandon and the odd firework or two.
