Leeds-based producer Krotone, takes the listener on a journey through the past, present and future of underground dance music, as he pays homage to his home city with Stranger, a 5-track EP on Of Paradise that traverses the outer limits of UK club music.

EP opener Just Can’t, is a stripped-back house track, powered by a raw and bouncy kick, flavoured with infectious vocals, whispering hi-hats and warm dub textures. Following this is title track Stranger, an intoxicating dose of swaggering club music that sits somewhere between off-kilter house and future-focused garage. Rolling kicks and wonky percussion are interwoven with sharp stabs and a vocal hook dripping with attitude.

Kicking off the B-side is Have You, an alluring and euphoric slice of early 90s rave nostalgia updated for 2021. Swirling pads, trademark drum work and another perfectly engineered vocal hook, all work together to capture the magic found in the heart of the dance floor. Progress pushes things into more tribal territory, with its raw, tight percussion, pulsating bassline and smokey pad work, that, when brought together, offer a moment of clarity in an uncertain world.



Rounding off the release is Resolute, a dubbed-out, spacey affair that employs bouncy kicks, rolling percussion and crystalline pads to maximum effect. A richly textured and blissful sign-off to an EP that further cements Krotone’s status as one-to-watch.

Precision engineered for RS Turbo systems and word-of-mouth basement raves, Stranger is a crowd-moving, yet intimate journey through the heart of the laser tunnel.

Unrivaled Groove Vol. I is a limited vinyl and digital compilation featuring 8 tracks from 10 artists — 5 from the U.S. and 5 from the UK — who come together to show that the connection between the US & UK Garage scenes is only growing stronger. Curated during quarantine, the record is a gorgeous mix of classic and forward-thinking styles, ranging from vocal-heavy, 90s-laden 2-step to NUKG, Breaks/D'n'B, and Bassline. While there is yearning in every one of these tracks — for live music, for community, the club, and even a dash of normalcy — there’s also an incredible amount of hope for what's currently upon us: the return of the rave. Luckily for us at Maison Fauna, Berwick is happy to provide for this return with experimental Breaks track, "La Flamingo." Berwick's unique analog and modular style gives his music an almost improvisational quality and a unique sense of life. When asked about the track, Berwick said, it's a "hug your mates in the woods, glitter all over your face" kind of track, and we can't help but agree.

OS Premiere: James Bangura - Target Velocity [Holding Hands Submerged]

It’s no coincidence that Susan has yet another match with the Box. Wait, we mean. Ok, let’s start over. Match Box has a second date with Susan. No one has to perform a rain check here, because the evening is in full effect. Here’s how the story goes.

It’s a dreamy vibe. The wind gushes between our gears as the sunset tickles the scene. We are sensitive to the light. We believe in what is to come. We’re on the hunt. In the far out foggy clearance we are struck by the sparks of a very rare object. Amethysts depict a calm purple variety of quartz. Whatever that means, we’re floating on an unknown cloud. This Amsterdam duo really does this to us, huh? Heavy on the synths, easy on the emotions. A banger in the making, is what is whispered into our ears. Trippy echoes massage seemingly infinite chords, whistles and sounds I’ve never heard before. I really like this kind of.. uh.. you know.

Two drinks down the line and the fluids of life become increasingly apparent. Tip-toeing from left to right, the jumpy stabs of house music stand glaring at our eardrums. We need to have a shot. Let’s order this one called - what was it again? - oh yeah, Fluidum. Down the throat it goes and we notice an increasing pace. That familiar echo rings our bells. Again. This song demands we go with the flow. Let’s do it. A casual stomper. But only if you really sit down and try to understand.

Do you ever read? Have you ever felt that sensation? You know what I’m talking about. The one where you suddenly wake up as a bug, clustered to your bed, crawling up the wall? Or the other one where your mind is oppressed by a nightmarish endeavour that keeps on repeating itself? The drums. The bass. It’s all part of this adventure. Let go of the nightmare. Embrace reality. Because you are free. As you shift into the ease of life you are blessed by an inner momentum. You don’t have to read Kafka to be Kafkaesque. Match Box tell their story and offer you an alternative to repetitive madness by introducing a novel claim. One that will bring us to the next level. Go now, go.

Shall we hit the casino then? Sure. A gamble is what this really is. These boys call it a Mutation Gamble, for it translates into a multiplicity. You kno’wha’I’m’Sayin’? The snares are tender, the futurism is constant. A little breather in the middle segues into an augmented past. Just as we think we know where this is headed, the echoing vocals grab our hand and say: not here, but there. That is where we will commence that feeling of tomorrow. OK, you say. I am with you on this one.

Everyone works hard for a climax. Down the line is where it stands. We really need to lean back. We need to observe. Flattering spirits linger as the background noise fades into a holistic feast of synthesised cinematic culture. This is the culture we strive for. A modular masterpiece is what we are presented. Is this some kind of new technique?

Have you caught your breath yet? Well, there’s no choice here. A mescaline-induced trip from the here and the now is generated in a collaboration between the boxed matches and Exo Moda. An intense click overwhelmingly bangs into a fast-paced anthem. We’re all dancing at this point in time. And precisely time is what we are now, finally, questioning.  It’s been a trip. It’s been a momentary invasion of our mind. It’s been a pleasure. Actually, did someone say it was going to rain? I’ve danced myself dry and am ready to do it all again.

OS Premiere: Buen Clima - Croma [Peach Discs]

Originally from West Wales now residing in Amsterdam in a studio nestled beside the river Ij, Maroki now joins the ROOS family following a string of stellar releases. He leaves nothing to chance, using his classically trained skills and expertly engineered sounds into a pool of influences that range from breaks, moon-lit acid and heads-down chuggy goodness. 

The record launches with title track ‘Emerald City’ a moody cut that whisks you away from the city's bustling streets and off the beaten track. Maroki’s fixed hand helps elements blend seamlessly into another, in what feels like a personal guide through the emerald’s subterranean. Then comes the gentle and tranquil electronics of ‘Alfred Stole My Brain’ both welcoming and meditative, while the swing in drums provide dance-floor functionality and set the pace. The A side comes to a grand close with ‘Talk2Me’ a brooding acid cut that mixes in elements of breaks and aquatic synths. The track's swelling energy feeds from the A side's previous two, culminating in a build up of emotion and speed. 

‘Total Recall’ raises its hypnotic head, a series of winding synths and 4/4 kick drums creating a maze of sound, before perhaps the record's hidden gem ‘All Be Over’ arrives like an old friend. The track’s familiar sound design coupled with Maroki’s distinct personality create a warm and lasting friendship; melting together old and new perspectives. ‘Slower’ rounds off the EP, an equally stunning and fiery mix of breaks and angelic electronics.

Flowing between dreamy textures and imaginative soundscapes, ‘Circadian Rhythm’ is an EP on a quest to find the perfect balance between mindful listening and club hysteria. This is never an easy task, but in the safe hands of UK based producer Will Silver it’s a fluid experience that blends seamlessly between worlds. In the past Will has released genre experiments on Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs label ‘Nice Age’ and has been remixed by renowned producers, Surpreems & 1-800 GIRLS, showcasing a talent for sound design that can sit with the best. 

Will advances into quasi tropical territory, the smell of wet concrete still evident from the world left behind in the mesmerizing opener ‘Sine[IN]’. Ghostly voices combine beautifully with breakbeats and acidic leads resulting in a mysterious tale, its final chapter lost at sea. ‘Oriole’ flips the script and features emerging UK artist Ell Murphy; her gleaming vocals acting as the protagonist in a nostalgic trip of celestial breaks with an electro sheen. ‘She Could Be A Cartoon’ closes out the A side, flanked by intense rhythms, atmospheric melodies and idiosyncratic bass. 

Experimental by nature, balanced by live drum sequences, 'Sci-fi’ produces a unique listening experience with an extraterrestrial twist. The sound of birds in the distance and the cleansing nature of the sea are front and center in ‘Obsolescence’, before the delicate rhythms and entrancing silhouette of ‘Sine[Out]’ waves goodbye from the horizon.

This is a tale of two firsts, our first release on Tight Chest and also Will Penn’s debut. We found ‘Stijl’ mutating in a vortex somewhere between a rave flyer and an EMU-6400 ULTRA. The tune blends elements of old school Jungle, breaks and techno. This track offers a
chance to get a little introspective in places with eerie dialog and moody pads, while also being somewhat wily and relentless. ‘Try Not To Worry (Nothing Is Easy)’ is a B-side oozing lush textures and exuberant lead lines, glued together by tight breaks and warm subs. This track is an ode to better times. There are rumours it was formed on the Express ‘93 service from Kyoto to London.
The ‘Stijl ‘Night Night Mix’ is a rework that has been flipped and slowed right down with a steady groove and ghostly textures. Combined with this are vocals that sound like a diary entry being
spoken over the tannoy of a passenger plane flying over the dystopian swamplands. All the tracks were written and recorded in 2019 and are some of the first produced by Will Penn. We wanted to capture the rawness before he loses his beginner's edge and sells his soul to the internet in exchange for the next ‘level up’ in the production game. Hold On, Tight Chest !
