Jesse Futerman - #1 fave restaurant in Toronto which closed down a month ago because of condo development. It was 3 blocks from my house and had the greatest falafel I have ever eaten. They had been at that corner for over 24 years and fed me for most of my teen-hood up (I'm a fucking fool who does not cook). Ever since they closed, I refuse to get falafel elsewhere. Every time I had the falafel, it was made right on the spot. Food that was integral to both myself and my music.

After a brief wait between releases, UK-based deep house label @secret-reels is back with a new record. The imprint bears a sound that is often both bittersweet and pensive -- a shout to the aesthetic of the now defunct Purple Velvet -- and has a serious nose, err, ear for talent. Bordeaux producer Leon Revol (@leonidmusique) is at the helm for SR007, after showing promise with releases on the likes of Pressed for Time and Monologues. It's a five track EP (four originals and a remix) - aptly named Astral Plane - that delves into flavors of the cosmic variety.

The A1 slot is occupied by "Far With A Van", which our friends at Sleazy Beats gave us a peek into a short time ago. It's an airy and smooth jam, layered with synths, perfectly tuned drums and smart samples. The title track, "Astral Plane" accompanies it on the art-side, in all its dusty, spacey glory.

On the flip comes our premiere - Bolting Bits favorite Admin's remix of "Far With A Van". The Bristolian beatsmith managed to find the sample used in the original mix (or something in the exact same key and vein), flipping it into a warm, organic version. Thick and crackly drums hold up the track as melancholy strums and angelic horns adorn the arrangement above a bouncing bassline. Ultimately, the track builds to a nicely executed climax; all samples smartly cued and positioned.  It's a deft re-imagination of the perfectly delicious original take, and repurposes the cut for more sombre, late hours play.

Rounding out the B are "St. James" and "Outside", two heady synth-led deep house groovers that nicely continue the vibe of the effort. Followers of Secret Reels and their polished deep house sound will not be disappointed by this 12" in the slightest. Moreover, young Leon has displayed some serious skill here and will surely be a name to watch in the near future.

Following on from the positive feedback for KRL’s 'Third' EP released via the buzzing Quintessentials imprint, the label has tapped a pair of eclectic talents to remix the material. Taking on the standout track 'Never Leave' is label mate Loz Goddard who flips the original into a smooth and shimmering ballad highlighted by deep emotional tones and broken beat percussion. It's a moody motif that tugs at the heart strings and delivers a beautifully sensual tune.  

The 'Never Leave Remixes' is set for release March 22.

I found out I was getting evicted from it, this sudden chock turned into a decision to do this album. It made sense, like an "end of an era" thing. I was pretty isolated back then, spending almost all my time outside of the studio with my daughter Bozi. She snapped the cover photo while I was picking out records for a gig. I never wanted to leave the studio during these months, but I realise now how the breaks with Bozi worked for the process - they gave me space to reflect on the music I was making. Burnt EP is a showcase of ambient mastery - a wistful folktronic collage akin to the mellower stylings of Four Tet, Seb Wildblood and Ross From Friends. Slipping between states of rhythmic formality (Duck Tape) and freeform soundscapes (Empting), Burnt EP vibrates on multiple levels. Threads of hip hop and lo-fi house (Burnt) embroider the tracklisting, uncovering a finessed sound that is at once both mellowed and full of intent.
