It is always a pleasure to review a track from a friend, especially when this friend is someone you know for almost 20 years: Bernardo Pinheiro, back in the days in our hometown, Belém do Pará, used to make a then beardless young dinosaur dance like a maniac with his classy samba-infused Drum N’ Bass DJ sets, but now, featuring a different sonority, we can lose ourselves to dance to something less chaotic and turbulent, more suitable to our current age.

Over the years, Bernardo finally decided to use his long-held Brazilian Funk & Boogie influences to evolve as a multifaceted and versatile artist, establishing himself as the most influential name in the Nu Disco scene in the North of the country. The national (and at a certain point international) fame came when his works were released on the mighty label Barefoot Beats.

For his debut on the interesting Cocada Music, Bernardo delivers a high-quality single called “Run Free” in which he showcases the absurd evolution he has experienced as a producer, skilfully bringing together a part of his affluent music background and blending Tim Maia with Azymuth, Marcos Valle, and Lincoln Olivetti in order to provide something with, yes, an old school aura, but extremely fresh and invigorating.

The Original and Disco Mixes come accompanied by a stunning remix made with love by Rio de Janeiro-based Carrot Green. His Spacefunk Dub interpretation covers “Run Free” with a layer of cosmic elements as if Daniele Baldelli were buoyantly flirting with the concoction of Samba and Stardust, and the result is a slower but highly danceable piece. For the fans of modern Rare Grooves out there, this is a must-have, peeps!

Hell Yeah takes a look through the weird and wonderful lens of Brussels-based Caramel 3000 for its next dance floor trip. He serves up four cuts that collide leftfield electronics, dark disco and ancient cosmic wonderment into captivating new forms.

Caramel 3000 operates at the fringes, where eerie textures, irregular arpeggios and silver-tongued samples all coalesce. His interest in visual culture, semiotics and fiction permeates his musical understanding while he also embraces accidental methods and primitive designs when cooking up his sonic brews.

Opener 'Ottagono Corse' is a lithe, slow-motion workout with gurgling leads and sludgy bass. It's an elastic rhythm that pops and hops as it fixes your gaze down a trippy rabbit hole.
'Super Rapido' is another brilliantly loose assemblage of lumpy drums and withering sci-fi synths. Synthetic bleeps and drips are offset by warm percussion and make for something alluringly exotic. The same slow and heavy, dubbed-out rhythm defines 'Wetlands Tempo,' this time with muffled voices, muttered spoken words and melancholic pads all layered up to perfection. It somehow sounds like an ancient ritualistic dance and futurist disco at the same time before 'Holy Studio' takes you deep into a steamy jungle amongst distant elephant trumpets, squeals and cosmic leads that signal the end of the world.

This is kaleidoscopic music for curious minds; freaky grooves for eccentric dance floors.

Divided in two parts, the “Bamboo Shows Tapes 001” brilliantly blends everything from modern productions to late 20th century inspirations, going around soothing new age, poetic fourth-world music and psychedelic folk on A-Side, while B-Side focuses on more rhythmical materials with slightly-acid transcendental breaks and mystical

In 2020, Leng Records quietly reached the ripe old age of 10 years old. To mark the achievement, co-founders Paul ‘Mudd’ Murphy and Simon Purnell have compiled a special celebratory compilation featuring a mixture of historic tracks, overlooked gems, inspired remixes and previously unheard exclusives.

When founding the label, the pair wanted to represent the more chugging, mid-tempo end of the dance music spectrum – the point where 21st century nu-disco, Balearica and slow-house meets 1970s art-rock, krautrock and space disco. It’s this trademark cosmic disco-not-disco sound that dominates 10 Years of Leng, proving that the duo has rarely strayed from their sharply defined ethos.

Fittingly, the vinyl version of the compilation – a limited-edition affair which boasts a gatefold double-album and a bonus 10” single tucked inside – kicks off with an exclusive: the never-before-heard instrumental mix of Mudd and Harks’ joyous recent single ‘Susta’. Other exclusives across the collection include a wonderfully spacey and dubbed-out chunk of mid-tempo dancefloor fusion from San Francisco’s Cole Odin (‘The Numbers Game’) and, on the bonus 10”, brand new tracks from rising stars Lex and Harvey Couture.

From day one, Leng’s output has included commissioned remixes that are frequently the equal of, if not arguably an improvement on, the tracks being tampered with. That side of the label’s story is naturally represented on the compilation by a quartet of celebrated reworks: Mudd’s sleazy, mid-altering and insanely heavy ‘Slow Rave Mix’ of Tiago’s ‘The Source’, the glistening Balearic disco bliss of Max Essa’s instrumental version of Cantoma classic ‘North Shore’, Pete Herbert’s legendary piano-sporting nu-disco take on early Apiento gem ‘She Walks’, and an epic, dubbed-out Idjut Boys revision of Mountaineer’s ‘Golden Chalk’.

Elsewhere across the collection, Purnell and Murphy have chosen to showcase cuts from artists who have played a big part in Leng’s evolving story over the last 11 years. San Francisco’s 40 Thieves are represented by the druggy dub disco-meets-psychedelic rock chugger ‘Backwards Love’, while label mainstays Mushrooms Project offer up the even more psychedelic, rock-tinged headiness of ‘Hello Darling’. There’s also room for Turkish producer Ali Kuru’s inspired – and especially exotic – single ‘Luna’, and the low slung, always-rising cosmic disco heaviness of Fernando’s ‘Blue Impala’, an underground club smash for the label that first appeared in stores back in 2012.

Packed with sought-after tracks and overlooked gems, 10 Years of Leng is a fitting finale to the label’s first decade. In parts hazy, hallucinatory and heady, it deftly showcases the imprint’s refreshingly psychedelic and spaced-out take on contemporary electronic music culture.
