A journey Into 80's Japan's Ambient and Synth Pop Sound by Japanese based label Jazzy Couscous."Kumo No Muko" is 12 tracks on 2XLP  put together by Alixkun. He's spent 10 years digging the dusky creates of Tokyo exploring the many faces of Japanese music. After having brought us the essence of 90s underground Japanese house with the x3 LP "House...Once upon a time in Japan",  he has decided to explore a more ambient and atmospheric side of Japanese music.
With "Kumo No Muko", he dives in the 80s era of Japan, standing for economic prosperity, the beginning of the bubble era and a desire for exotic sensations. The opening track, "Underwater Dreaming" by Takashi Kokubo, is just that : an ode to resorts, seas and setting suns. Slow paced and dreamlike, takes you on a journey to the deep blue sea. The two following tracks see wonderful ambient performances by some of the most incredible Japanese composers with Keizo Inoue, Kazumi Watanabe, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Nobuyoshi Ino.  Dip in the Pool's "Kuroi Dress No Onna" or Mami Koyama's "Love Song" bring on a floating vocal layer to deep and ethereal instrumentals, adding an authentic Japanese flavour to this project, while Fumio Miyashita's "In The Beginning" or Yoshio Suzuki's "The Mirage", through their mystic pad's variations, sound like an invitation to space exploration far beyond the limits of human imagination. Chakra's closing track "Itohoni", with its repetitive mantra and uplifting instrumental, resonates like a joyful firework closing down the curtain on a wonderful project, with the icing on the cake being Lucy Harris' wonderful artwork.

This album  stands as a tribute to a scene & era kept in the dark until recently, excavated by a Tokyo digger, for all the diggers around the world. A superb double album that really puts the Japan's '80s ambient scene in context. 
Dreamy electronic sounds with a mixture of acoustic and electronic instrumentation. Nods to jazz coming thick and fast with a couple of well-known names on show. The Jazzy Couscous crew have done an amazing job in highlighting the lesser-known tracks from unsung Japanese heroes.

Inspired by Erik Hall’s recent update of the Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians, we’ve invited other artists in our extended label family to cover the classical compositions that inform their respective musical journeys, culminating in a series entitled Composure: Classical Reworks for Modern Relief.  Aimed at providing mental and spiritual respite in our uncertain era, the series is appropriately commenced by Joseph Shabason’s take on Erik Satie’s “Gymnopedie No. 1.”

"When Satie premiered this piece for the first time, he gathered all of Paris' music critics and musicians into a theater, and had a big cocktail party with a piano player playing background music.”  Shabason explains, “Off to the side there was a concert space with a stage, piano, and chairs. After the party everyone filed into the concert space and found their seats. Satie got on stage and told everyone that the background music they just heard over drinks was his new material, ‘thank you and have a good night.’"  Motivated by this story of an innovator breaking format, Shabason's version of the piece intends to capture the opium infused feeling of Paris in the late 1800s, at a cocktail party where voices and conversations drift in and out, ignoring the music that would later prove immortal, let alone spur an entirely new way of listening and composing music in the century to come.  Shabason elaborates, invoking the ego dilemma of all working musicians, "I wanted to capture the loneliness of playing something that's musically meaningful while people just talk over what you're doing and what you've created. It's something that every gigging musician has experienced, and it's fucking awful...but there is also a kind of warm loneliness to it. You know that no one cares about your music, and in that knowledge you are left with the feeling of doing something just for yourself…which further solidifies your resolve and investment in what you’re doing."  

Collaborating with string player Drew Jurecka, Shabason uses woozy tape-manipulated sax, piano, and string swells to create an enveloping world that's both forward-facing, and faithful to its source material. Shabason warps the piece into a mildly hallucinatory depiction of isolation in a crowded space, with hazy synth melodies that urge us to pay the tab and head home, though not-so-deep-down we know there’s not a cozier space on Earth than our table for one. In this period of social distancing it invokes a paradoxical, yet relatable, sentiment: a longing for the day when the crowds reassemble, so we can find our own fond loneliness amidst them once again.

The midnight hour crept unto thee with hasty caution, revealing 'A Little Night Music: Aural Apparitions from the Geographic North', our third putrid prowl into Halloween-inspired sounds to torment and tantalize throughout the season. For this bout of distinguished dementia, we culled 31 brand new tracks of haunted hysteria conjured by some of the most alluring ambientists and outer auteurs from around the world. 

Spanning over two hours across two cassettes, 'A Little Night Music…’ unfurls itself in a literary horror structure, appearing and disappearing through a stirring Prologue and Epilogue by London-based cellist Oliver Coates, with each side of the cassettes introducing its Chapter with a chilling dirge courtesy of the inscrutable Geographic North House Band.  

What fills the ensuing pages is a mirthful tale concocted by an assembly exploring a realm all at once mournful and fatalist at its core. Entries from Clarice Jensen, Malibu, and the collaboration of Like a Villain and Christina Vantzou bring about endless glacial landscapes accented by pitch-grey skies. Conversely, transmissions from Michael Valentine West, M. Sage, Gregg Kowalsky, and Austrian ambient stalwart Fennesz explore richly textured mines of foreboding glee. 

Suspicion is the word when considering Zelienople’s eerie horse-carriage clip-clop, Nick Malkin’s neon-lit noir-jazz, or Carmen Villain’s gripping dub excursion. Elsewhere Ki Oni, Takagi Masakatsu, and Mary Lattimore (joined here by Paul Sukeena) provide glimmers of warmth amidst a tortured chill. 

Notable is the resurrection of Lotus Plaza and his solemnly hopeful piano composition, while barren hallucinations courtesy of Alex Zhang Hungtai, Ilyas Ahmed, and Danny Paul Grody set the stage for a third act confrontation from Atlantans Fit of Body and Algiers, providing a one-two serving of sensual unrest and cautionary homily.  

With hope and resolve shimmering through the final moments of our journey, know that all proceeds from the digital and cassette editions go directly toward Feminist Women's Health Center, an Atlanta-based nonprofit providing safe, accessible, and compassionate abortion and gynecological care to all those who need it without judgement.
