Sound Synthesis is the solo project of Keith Farrugia based in Malta. The small mediterranean island has an unlikely affinity with electro music and a strong scene that included the highly respected young producer Microlith, who sadly died aged only 24 years old. The scene continued on in his name with Sound Synthesis at the forefront with an array of heavy weight releases on labels such as Electro Records, Furthur Electronix, Infiltrate, and Specimen. 

The record imagines an ‘Electro Planet’, with a the title track engulfing the listener into a alien world run by Kraftwerk autonotons commanding synthesisers and vocoders live in harmony within it’s rich sonic landscape. ‘Robot Collision’ takes the record off into alien worlds with ominous overtones of spiralling synth lines, pulsating bass before descending into an abyss of modulation. 

On the flip, ‘Electronic Machines’ hits firmly at the peak time dancefloor and we can't wait to hear it back on the big systems where it belongs loaded with dense palpitating bass lines, protruding from the midst of slick 808s and soaring string embellishments, and a dash of vocoder fragmentation. The EP is nicely completed with ‘Energy Patterns’, the understated bomb of the record and a juggernaut of pure menace, hitting with a bass line that will decimate clubs like fabric, Fold and Panorama Bar on their return - think churning acid lines, shrieking synth FXs, and a huge electro groove - not for the faint hearted but that suits us just fine.

Following their debut album ‘Visions Of Ultraflex’, the Norwegian-Icelandic electro-duo serves up a mouthwatering extended remix 12" with two of Norways most distinctively renowned underground producers and DJs. Telephones twists ‘Work Out Tonight’ into a bubbly Balearic Pop block-party, fusing the vibe of NYC Peech Boys, Quincy Jones' 80s productions and Larry Levan's infamous take on Nami Shimada/Soichi Terada, all rounded off with a decadent beatless ambient acid outro mix. On the flip, the norse force that is DJ Sotofett, heavy-handedly rubs ‘Secret Lover’ into an uncompromising chunk of Cosmic Electro, with growling vocoders, rugged drums and stratospheric synths, progressively evolving into a tripped out dub-disco electro-mutant. Each side clocking in at approx. 12 minutes.. do not miss!

The month of March 2023 is such a significant and meaningful one for Dubblack, by cause of the second release of its young, yet incredibly promising catalogue, which will star Tagliabue and his three-track EP DUBBLACK002 (out both on vinyl and digital forms).
The record, which perfectly fits in the sonic context that the label and its founder GNMR are trying to form, superbly symbolises the essence of Dubblack with its deep, mysterious electronic attitude, thus making Tagliabue an ideal ambassador of this sound.

The Milanese DJ & producer -during the length of his EP- tells a story of masterly arranged, diverse and rhythmically solid tunes, giving evidence of the enormous care that he puts into the sound research underlying each and every one of his productions, and Dubblack002 makes no exception.

The opening track ‘Odissea’ lays the groundwork for the record to rise, with a cryptic intro which breaks out in a progressive detonation, referring to a late 90s/early 00s sound but interpreting the scenario with a modern, actual twist. ‘Baraka Trance’ keeps the standard high and, as the title suggests, offers the artist’s POV on the Trance matter with a high-tempo, neatly arranged beat and a slightly acid bass-line, both creating a constantly evolving eight minutes-long acoustic journey. ‘A Oltranza’ slows the pulse but doesn’t decrease the pressure with captivating rhythmics perfectly blended with an avant-garde harmonic section; a complex but never baroque arrangement that constantly holds the listener on the rope.

There were patterns everywhere, every crack in the sidewalk was part of something far bigger if he could only grasp it. Among the lines there were lessons to be learnt, lessons as to how the world around him worked and where it could be pulled apart. 

Walking the streets of the busy city he couldn’t help but look around at all the faceless beings, their empty stories and chaotic ambitions. They’d all come here to live the dream and reach their goals amidst the bright lights of the skyscrapers and late night diners. Who knew whether they might make it out the other side…

DOTT is the founder of pioneering record store and label More Rice based in Bangkok. He has helped breathe life into the progressive underground dance and electronic music community in the city and beyond. His new EP on Boiled Wonderland – a deep moving, dubbed out release which is reminiscent of old school Garage, UK Bass inspired influences and beyond..
