This EP is in fact a reflection on our state of mind of a turbulent year '22 for us. Some tracks refer to finding new courage and hope while others express the longing for long-lost loves. The record turned out in the style it did because we think this sounds best matches our experiences.
The mix of house, Italo, with references to early trance and electro creates a hybrid that best fulfills this task. In a parallel universe, this record might as well have been pastoral or classical music because of its charged themes. However, we want to break through the melancholy with an upbeat groove that is contagious and takes you on a bi ersweet trip.

Hola Olas is the electronic music project of Axel Smet and Quinten De Meester. Both shared a love for genres like Italo disco, electro, new wave, and indie dance and decided to start off a project honoring these genres back in '18. The sound of this project is therefore a mixture of the above genres with the addition of a personal touch. The past few years have been an ongoing search that is unfinished to this day, to fine-tune a sound that is recognizable, yet fresh.

“Edgy Future Discotheque” is the name of the brand-new and fresh-from-the-oven compilation released on the vital “Madchester”-based imprint Sprechen, but it could be also the name of the genre the label favours to publish. Its flawless curation process guarantees a catalogue full of, yes, edgy, out-of-the-box Disco-soaked gems, and the Volume 5 of its VA series does not go in another direction. On board, a true dream team of collaborators: Andy Buchan (SXDNS012), Flash Atkins, Ed Mahon (SXDNS068), Tom2Trax, Jimmy Turnbull, Mangetout, and Daco with a solid remix for Mr. Atkins’s contribution.

The track we were solicited to review comes from the criminal mastermind of Tom2Trax, an experienced British DJ who has been strolling through the muddy and marshy terrain of the production realm since his first appearance on Sprechen’s “Edgy Future Discotheque Vol. 3” in February last year.

His “Heatwave Horizon” seems to have been named after our doomed status quo: The near future will be bleak, brace yourselves! But before we all die due to the current and forthcoming climate emergency events, let’s melt on a packed and sweaty dance floor, shall we? Tom2Trax’s cut is devoted to triggering momentary happiness not only at hot pool parties but also on dark indoor grounds: Frolic percussive elements, suitable vocal hooks, and a correct amount of acid set the mood of one of the best tracks of the compilation.

NY label HOMAGE is forever flipping the script, whether it’s raucous techno and experimental sounds from their founder Ryan Clover, ambient soundscapes from Myles Avery, or acidic goodness from Aldonna, they live and die by the label's tagline that ‘the limit does not exist.’ Now it’s Parisian DJ & producer Chevals time to turn the tides once again, following up from his first EP on HOMAGE back in 2018; with his six track exploration ‘The House By The Sea’.

‘EuroMadness’ undocks and sets sail across the Mediterranean bridging uplifting and curious melodies coupled with peak-time euphoria and 90s nostalgia. ‘Persiennes’ brings with it a rush of emotions and transports us back to our youth, where the life-changing melodies of trance music's origins could be heard piercing through our speakers. ‘Strummers’ then brings forth images of rolling hills and pale blue skies as we move closer to shore, before ‘Breeze’ enters the fray with its Balearic-infused warmth. The EPs penultimate track ‘Sunsets’ energy is infectious, with chunky kickdrums and ear-wiggling hooks pushing the energy levels higher as day turns to night. ‘Astra’ then finishes off the release with an expansive look outward as we gaze over the reflective blue surface of the ocean city.

''Our relationship with the characters in this release is 100% the result of the existence of a global community of dance music.

Vivi Seixas has been one of the muses of the Rio de Janeiro House scene since the days of Frenetik Crew (2009), but it was the foreigner Jay West who was responsible for our meeting.

He told us that American Mike Frugaletti would come to Rio de Janeiro, at the time Mike was a partner of Joey Youngman in the Special Forces project. Youngman was the owner of one of our favorite labels, Fetish. As soon as we could, we brought Mike to play at our party, and he came with his Brazilian wife, Vivi Seixas. It was his first gig in Brazil. Mike and Vivi are now good friends, but our friendship has endured.

Cut to 2023, right after Vivi’s recent interview for our show, she told us about a concert she had attended and was completely ecstatic about the message and energy of the music. She was certain that she wanted to produce the artist, she wanted a partner, and here we are, six months later!

She brought the guy to our studio, but before that, she armed us with the incredible references of the artist for his future album. The songs flowed instantly in the studio, and the first one, “Caixa Craniana,” is a (very) magnetic resonance of Fausto Borel Cardoso’s restless and brilliant mind, more popularly known as Fausto Fawcett.

Fausto Fawcett is the author of two of the biggest hits from Rio de Janeiro in the 90s, “Katia Flavia” and “Rio 40 Graus”.
“Katia Flavia” is featured in the soundtracks of “Tropa de Elite” and Roman Polanski’s film “Bitter Moon”.
Rio 40 graus it's a kind of carioca anthem in the voice of Fernanda Abreu.

His performative and experimental work made Fausto Fawcett a prominent figure in rap rock and cyberpunk literature in Brazil. He emerged in the Rio de Janeiro nightlife with performances that blended theater, music, and poetry.

In addition to the original version that will be part of Fausto Fawcett’s upcoming album, we have created two remixes: the Aureum Remix, showcasing our vision for the new dance music scene in Rio de Janeiro, and the Don Renato Ratier Remix.

Renato Ratier is a central figure in the development of the club scene in Brazil. He is the owner and founder of one of the most important clubs in the history of global electronic music, D-EDGE São Paulo, which has just celebrated its 23rd anniversary. He recently opened the super club “Surreal” in Santa Catarina, in the southern region of Brazil, which is one of the largest clubs in the world. The inauguration of D-EDGE Rio de Janeiro is also scheduled for this year, making him the biggest player in the club scene in South America and one of the most innovative and influential entrepreneurs in the global scene.

In addition to his entrepreneurial side, Renato is one of the most sought-after DJs in the Brazilian scene and will be on a European tour this summer. He is a regular presence in the best clubs and biggest festivals on the planet such as Tomorrowland, DGTL, Exit, BPM, EDC, Melt, Hï Ibiza, Amnesia, Womb, among countless others. Over his 28-year career, he has developed a strong and distinctive sound that is perfect for peak time wherever he goes. With two albums released and releases on the most prestigious global labels, it is a great honor to have his remix of “Caixa Craniana,” an intense house track ready for the most critical moments of his performances.”

'toucan sounds welcomes Felipe Gordon for ‘The Warehouse Beast’, a timeless house record and a tripped-out remix from Chicago mainstay Glenn Underground.

Felipe Gordon’s low-slung and funky title track 'The Warehouse Beast' kicks off with deep drums and playful chords. It's a nice loose-limbed cut infused with jazzy melodies and muffled vocals that spread warmth. It's an irresistible groove that shows off Gordon's ability to tap into truly emotive feelings. His brilliant 'It's Over (Drive My Car)' picks up the pace but stays low and deep, its smeared chords like rays of fading sun while its elastic bassline roams free down low.

Glenn Underground is a house pioneer. His jazzy style and complex grooves have defined a uniquely deep and musical take on the genre over the last 25+ years.
