A new artist on TT! 

Athlete Whippet join the Toy Tonics family! The London/ Berlin-based duo makes a sound that is based on futuristic breakbeats combined with deep jazz chord progressions and a kind of funk that sounds more like it was made in 2100 than in a year behind us. Definitely not a retro record. The “Vesta EP” is a further proof that the connection between London and Berlin, that has been build by several Toy Tonics artists (Cody Currie is the latest in the gang), is becoming a strong one. The combination of the Berlin dancefloor sound and the UK jazz fusion soul is changing the scene and creating new moods. Neo soul and house, broken beats and disco… There are a lot of things happening in that new world and Athlete Whippet could be a strong player in that sound. 

The two guys already achieved great support by UK radio DJs such as Annie Mac and Jamz Supernova for their first collaborative EP “Touch” (with Metronomy’s Olugbenga), followed by their 2020 solo EP “Your Love Is Lifting Me”, an ode to compassion and solidarity, and remixes for labels including Rhythm Section.

This next Toy Tonics EP takes one more step into a futuristic sound that connects Broken Beat, House & Neo Soul.
The EP was produced by Fényan. France based dancer and producer (originally from Martinique) who hooked up with Kosmo Kint.  Soul singer raised in New York and since one year part of The Toy Tonics crew in Berlin.

Fényan & Kosmo Kint met shortly after Kosmo Kint's first release on Toy Tonics (the „Get Lost“ EP with french producer Mangabey). Together they created three magic sparkling pieces of music. A unique sound inspired by the UK Jazz sound and the broken beat scene. A great further step in the evolution of uptempo Neo Soul dancemusic.

Fényan's rhythms are special. The groove is unique. This music makes you dance differently. No wonder as Fényan (his real name is Kwame)  is a professional dancer. 
He is travelling around the world teaching dancing with his own dance company and is a judge on international dance battles. Besides dancing, he has been producing beats since the age of 19 on his MPC. Influenced by the great names of deep jazz and fusion, but also inspired by the music from his origin Martinqiue: Zouk, Biguine, Bélè… you can feel this in the programming of his beats.

Besides the MPC Fényan tried many instruments, but mainly it’s the keyboards and the trumpet what he feels well with intuitively.
Kosmo Kint lives in Berlin for three years. He came from NYC where he was singing in Soul bands, hanging out with musicians and also writing songs for other artists. He is one of the many artists that moved from the big apple to Berlin recently. He joined the Toy Tonics crew almost 2 years ago to work on new styles between House and Soul. Disco and R&B. In fact there is a big movement of international top musicians coming to the German capital. It's not just DJs in Berlin. But a huge community of ex-pad musicians working on all kind of styles. Mixing the European electronic dancefloor music with all kinds of vibes and influences. And many of these musicians find a new home on Toy Tonics records.

Session Victim have become something of a phenomenon since their inception a little over 12 years ago. They bring a sense of fun and unrivalled energy to their live shows and DJ sets which instantly connects with any crowd in front of them and their charming disregard for musical boundaries ensures that you never know quite what to expect or where they’re heading next. When not feeding their addiction to pinball machines, the duo of Hauke Freer and Matthias Reiling are constantly creating, keeping things fresh by forming labels such as Retreat run by Hauke and Quarion, Pen & Paper run by the duo themselves and Hauke’s new baby Save The Books. Last year’s Needledrop LP for Night Time Stories saw them step away from the dance floor and head into deep, downtempo mode to great effect, and now Delusions Of Grandeur welcome back Session Victim for the release of Two Crowns which sees them edging back towards clubbier sounds, albeit with their trademark live instrumentation and highly musical approach.

The EP gives us three original tracks which move smoothly from the low- slung funky wobble of the title track with it’s stabbing analogue synths and house not house live drum groove, through to the lush, expansive sounds of Village Youth. Once again, Session Victim have created a collection of tracks which give us a sense of nostalgia for early 90’s Fila Brazilia/Solid Doctor records on the influential Porky label. A world where trippy spoken word samples, cut up breakbeats, deep pads and sine wave basslines live in perfect harmony and a sense of optimism flows through every note. Let’s face it, we can all do with some of that right now!

PREMIERE: Session Victim - Guidance

Heist Recordings regulars and all-time good guys Fouk are back!  Their ‘Blue Steel’ EP is filled with their signature grooves, chords and samples and might surprise a few of you out there. The sound design is top notch as always and there’s some rough edges on these tracks for an added bit of depth and personality.  Alongside that, the boys have collaborated with talented Dutch saxophone player Rebiere, who features on the title track. The EP holds three originals and a beautiful remix by Girls of the Internet.  Maarten and Lars feel sure that this EP  - Fouk’s fourth on Heist since their critically acclaimed ‘Kill Frenzy’ back in 2015 - is one you will not want to miss.

 

Kicking off with the gritty live jam ‘Blue Steel’, where Rebiere’s saxophone solo is accompanied by a killer bass line and some lovely off-kilter percussion. It’s deep, it’s jazzy and at the same time it’s a track that packs some serious peak-time punch.  ‘Don’t you Want To Boogie’ ups the tempo and energy and can only be described as 100% feel good filter-house.  Its got loops, loops and more loops. It’s mesmerizing, it’s funky and it’s unpretentious. This one is just here to boogie.

 

The B1 is reserved for the low end thump of the Girls Of The Internet remix of ‘Blue Steel’. After having released his album ‘Girls FM’ only a few months back and a remix compilation for UNKLE, we’re glad he found the time to work on the remix and deliver this gem.  GOTI goes for an eyes shut, dancing-in-your-bedroom version with smooth keys accompanying the sax solo.  Closing track ‘Money’, shows another side of Fouk’s sound, where we see them throwing in some beefed up disco funk. The tongue-in-cheek vocals and the squeaking acid line recorded over at the Dam Swindle studio together make for a track that oozes fun and good vibes.

Six releases in and Michigander label head Brian Kage teams up with the legendary French Techno producer, Taho, aka David Jacopin. The electronic music world knows to put respect on the Motor City, but the "Détroit EP" represents a fusion, emphasizing l’accent aigu — not a typo or spec on your screen that needs cleaning. Between Kage and Taho, their production pedigree includes releases for labels like FXHE, Planet-E, Delsin, F.Comm, and more, so it's no surprise the pairing makes for a masterfully produced EP covering the spectrum of Detroit house and techno sounds, with an added deft touch from its French connection.

"D-Twah," the D's first pronunciation, opens with classic Detroit house energy featuring all the modern accoutrements. Distant chatter between solar systems gives way to a springy bass line that sets off an interplanetary party starter with uplifting piano chord progressions and just a touch of scattered cosmic disco effects. Angelic synth choirs and arpeggiated lines introduce short breakdowns before all systems fire back up. This one is surefire fuel for the discothèque.

"La Belle Vie" picks things up with playful hand percussion, a driving guttural bass, and heavy Detroit techno stabs, reminiscent of its title in translation, one of techno's greatest hits a la Inner City. Beautiful strings sneak in building tension and drama before a piano releases any pent up energy through the stratosphere. It begs to bring on the underground warehouses or Movement festival stages again.

Entering electro terrain, "Tour De Troit" encapsulates Detroit's earliest robotic impulses, starting with inimitable, snappy 808 drums, which are pedaled over with deep pads and a revolving acid bassline. It drifts off into dreamy territory with smooth, jazzy synth waves before funky keys coolly cut through the haze. Whether early in the night or afterhours, breakers are always prepared to slide across the floor for this sound.

"Acid Renaissance" offers a clear epilogue to this journey with its cinematic and orchestral symphony. These emotive elements tower over electric undercurrents that complete an ending fit for having stumbled upon some epic space age discovery. At a time when NASA's Mars Perseverance Rover just provided the first audio recording of the Red Planet, this could very well have been the film score to that mission.

If Detroit's electronic music history is seen as a time capsule, Brian Kage and Taho have opened it, rearranged its parts to fit their mutual influences, and sealed it back together with a project worthy of future explorations.

We here at Discobelle can offer up the savory remix of the B-side track "You're Leaving But I'll Still Love You" courtesy of Finnish producer/dj @Saine. The smashing remix takes the melancholic track into clubbier and sweatier territory, on top of that Saine brings forth a wobbly sounding synth laced funkiness.

Today we are premiering a way out from the winter melancholy offered by a German producer and Super Tuff affiliate Tilman in his signature jazzy house spin onto Vaughan’s original “If I’d Been More Smart.”  Coming on a two-track single, Tilman’s remix is a dancefloor-friendly injection of the summery glee and cheering warmth, serving an ideal remedy for the dreadful and unsettling winter. The Fine label head adds a warm tape drift to the piano sample and lays it atop a chunky, MPC-driven house groove, effortlessly creating an irresistibly friendly and careless vibe.
