This old, melancholy ballad from Bulgaria’s southern Rhodope Mountains remains widely popular well into the21st century. Countless Bulgarian musicians, choral groups and soloists have their own unique recordings of Devojko Mari Hubava. On the internet, Google hits now total more than 10,000 – including haunting choral, acapella and musical presentations of all types, and occasional dances.
The ballad introduces a young couple in love who meet, perhaps for a last time, sensing that things are not going well. Over a drink they discuss which of them can tell the saddest story. The girl goes first; she’s come to realize that no dowry she could ever possibly assemble would be enough to bring acceptance from her boyfriend’s family. Then it’s the boy’s turn; he reveals that he has been drafted into the military – called to fight in a war he doesn’t want and from which he likely will never return.
Bulgarian listeners associate the saga to a time during the country’s 500-year occupation by the Ottoman Turks.
Sometimes Orthodox Christians living in the Rhodopes were presented with an ultimate choice – accept the Moslem religion or lose their lives. An iconic Bulgarian movie – “Time of Violence” – set in this time period portrays the heart-wrenching dilemma described in the ballad, with strains from Devojko Mari Hubava heard in the background -

For our next release we get visited from the far north of the two Hamburg friends Metatext & Karhua, who are well known for making dope music.

 

Their new creation is the Lungern EP, equipped with three original tracks and ready to take off. Beautiful remixes are coming from the usual suspects Deep Ändi & Deisen who are always up for fun. You can expect some dancefloor weapons on this release that will let the audience drift to higher grounds.

Here, he pays tribute to Sauveur Mallia, a French genius of instrumental Disco Music with a "slowed down dub mix" that transforms the track "Radium One" into a cosmic weapon for sleeping dance floors out there.

Blaq Numbers welcomes "Explorer Of The Humankind" back to the stable with his latest work, "Where Did Y’all Go?". The project began following some advice from the label head - “you should try to use your voice more!”. With that in mind, Humankind explored a new set of influences while writing and recording from 2018-2019. The four original compositions now find themselves on a brand new 12” backed by remixes from Larry Houl and Detroit’s Byron The Aquarius. 

"Where Did Y’all Go?" expands on Humankind’s previously established House sound and brings in elements of bedroom pop, with lyrical content exploring the modern conundrum of maintaining relationships in the age of social media. Not much is known about the Lyon native, but his music has built him a keen worldwide following since his debut productions surfaced in 2017.

“How can relationships change when you’re constantly connected with social networks? You're forced to stay in touch with everybody, which can be really painful sometimes or on the contrary very comforting.”

It’s always a pleasure to premiere material from a debut release. Today that pleasure comes courtesy of Glaswegian production duo, Denny Pally. Their record, Us Against The World, drops August 3 on Crash Reserve’s new sister label, Infinite Wisdom.

We could call it a ‘house’ EP, but that would undersell its diversity. Our premiere – the A1, called 'UATW' – fits snuggly in that category. But 'Vegan Chops' includes hints of 90s IDM, with some killer sax to match, while 'At It (Live Jam)' features an electro-style beat.

'UATW' is punchy and up-beat, simple, and effective. The classic house beat synergizes with a groovy bass synth to carry the track for its almost six minutes. Add to that some chopped vocal samples and dissonant-but-harmonious chords and the sonic picture feels well-rounded. It’s a dance floor tune, undeniably.

As into 'UATW' as we are, 'Vegan Chops' is perhaps the record’s highlight, and so deserves a notable mention. It’s unique; perfect for some quarantine-style background music that won’t put you to sleep but also won’t scream for your attention.

As its first release, Infinite Wisdom shows promising signs with Us Against The World. And as such, both the label and Denny Pally are making their mark as up-and-comers worth keeping an eye on.

When your roots have a broad geographical diversity, it’s very likely this will resonate in the music you make. This is certainly the case with Alma Negra and their new release on Heist. It seems they have embraced all their cultural influences more than ever in their new ‘Dakar Disco EP’. The whole record oozes class and musicality and feels like a carefree collage of the rich musical lives they live. The three originals on this EP vary in tempo and energy, giving you something for each moment of the day or night. They are accompanied by a remix from none other than the Japanese master of cosmic funk: Kuniyuki.

The EP’s closing track ‘Back in town’, is perhaps the clubbiest track of the set. A friendly acid line squeaks over tribal drums & chants and you immediately get pulled in by a great balafon hook. You can really hear how the guys feel at ease combining these worldly elements with modern electronics and ‘Back in town’ is a great example on how to blend these sonic worlds.

Zuntyh delivers 'Space 707' to the YUNG DUMB Records catalog to cap off summer 2020.  The France-native offers up four classically-influenced and floor-effective house numbers, varying in energy and mood, but never straying from a heavy focus on the rhythms and emotive grooves.  Jim Casanova's cameo appearance on the b-side comes with a left field club hybrid of the EP's most driven track, 'Work It', to close out the EP.
