Fun Boi is the project of Matty James, a hard-working industry pro hailing from Sydney, Australia. Captivated by the pulsating beats and neon lights leaking from club basements and warehouses, Matty dived into Sydney nightlife and a degree in audio-engineering. Driven by a relentless passion for electronica, honed his skills as a DJ, while juggling his studies and eventually, running Sydney&#39;s infamous Club 77. The “Five Roses EP”, a scintillating two-track release that epitomises Moox’s signature underground, deep house style.

Think early, oldskool house music. A rawness that hits some switch in your body that makes you want to move. Sounding precisely as if unearthed from a vault of dusty 90’s house records, “Five Roses EP” is a release that will make the old house heads reminisce and for new fans - ignite a new love for the original sound of deep house.

Opening with the titular track, “Five Roses”, this piece exudes a vibrant, breezy house vibe. Upbeat yet deep at the same time, on the main keyboard hook alone expect echo, reverb, resonance and then throw in some sub bass, a phat kick-drum and some spattered hi-hats. Now we have a track perfect for poolside lounging or daytime dance sessions.

Contrasting this with the b-side “Throw Down” Moox delves into a deeper, club-ready groove while maintaining that distinct lo-fi essence synonymous with his productions.

“Throw Down” is a track that could be filed under ghetto house, deep house and lo-fi. A heavyweight kick and accented tom drum lay the groundwork for the bongos and a wood block snare. The off-kilter key sequence conjures a sense of some really mean house music, an oldskool rawness so seldom heard nowadays.

The Mylss - Broken (Boite Music Records)

London based artist Doppelate is next up on X-Kalay and debuts on the label with a four tracker of Detroit house inspired club tracks. Having initially caught our attention with his records for our friends over at Lets Go Swimming we’re super excited to provide the platform for his next release. 

From the languid sleaze of the sawtooth bassline on “I Can’t Get You Out of my Head” to the pin point congas and rainforest vocal shots on “Johnny Longneck”; the A side is a functional and groovy affair, stripped back to the essentials in typical Doppelate fashion.

The B side takes a slightly more playful approach - Pila Pala Kisses utilizing looped pianos and some tongue in cheek percussion work before turning out a beautifully mesmerizing melody. “Club Canyon” closes things out in more understated tones; crisp hats skip over the lazy staccato bass whilst the dreamy pads induce an all too welcome state of haze… Play this one in the sun!

For those in London – we’ll be holding a release party at The Alibi in Dalston on the 10th August, hope to see some of you there.
