PREMIERE: Nnatn - Magia Du Samba [Moiss Music]

Israeli producer Nenor delivers a 4-tracker of impeccably produced dancefloor weapons for his second outing on Razor-N-Tape. Since releasing on Moodyman’s legendary Mahogani label a few years back and as part of duo Rabo & Snob, Nenor has been honing his craft in the studio, and now puts his skills on full display on an EP that ranges from the poppy disco house of “How Can I Be Free” to the deep Larry Heard-esque textures of “Do You Remember,” and the gritty underground bangers of  the title track and “Work That.”  He did indeed take his time on this beautifully crafted record, and the result is something quite special. 

Artist Bio

Nenor is the alias of Tel-Aviv producer and DJ Ronen Sabo . His debut EP “I Love You” was signed to the iconic house label Strictly Rhythm , which included remixes by Andres and Luke Solomon, followed by a second release on Moodymann ’s legendary Mahogani Music, with many more releases to follow on Razor ‘n Tape, Detroit Swindle’s Heist Recordings, Defected, Sol Power , Whiskey Disco, TAU, Partyfine and his own label - Nenorion, which serves as his personal incubator for the funky underground sounds of Tel Aviv .

Nenor grew up surrounded by music. Being close to his father who was a DJ and record shop owner . Nenor was always absorbing key skills and musical experiences related to sound engineering, recording and making multi-track tapes. As a teenager, Nenor picked up guitar and bass and was quick to discover his own musical taste, developing an interest in funk, soul and jazz.

By the late-nineties, he began to use his ever expanding funky gear to form his own take on funk and disco. Nenor started the only disco and funk event in Tel Aviv with friend and colleague Eyal Rob. They continue to produce and DJ today, also known as "Rabo & Snob."
In his early 20s, he moved briefly to Jamaica where he stayed for nearly a year recording original reggae and dancehall material with local Jamaican talents, and the legendary Marley brothers.

Upon his return to Israel from Jamaica, he went on to work on various award-winning albums with local artists, and to this day is sought after for his signature blend of raw, funky yet futuristic sound production.

Germany is not known for soul music, but some of the hottest disco artists of the 1970ies and 80ies were based in Germany. To be more precise, in Munich. Donna Summer, Moroder, Faltermeyer, Boney M or Silver Convention who created the „string disco sound“ came from Munich’s wild disco scene in the 1970ies. And that's the vibe you get with the new GOME guys. The 25 years old guys originally come from Munich. They have the Munich disco DNA. Which means: They feel the funk, they know about Soul music and good bass lines, they know how to groove (not to bang) and they have that slight sense of irony and easiness you need to make good disco music. (Some say the dark days of Berlin techno are over after Covid, Munich disco is the opposite.)

GOME are a live act. Their disco is played on several drum machines, keyboards, sequencers and microphone. (Check their live on Insta). Their first EP got massive props from the likes of Laurent Garnier („Love love love for this EP“) and other more funk oriented house DJs.

The new one goes further. It's 80ies disco. The first track „Teach you“ was produced in the raw style of early Prince or the legendary Sexual Harrassment. A pumping bass line, driving 808 beats and funky rap vocals is the only thing you need. Erobique, King of German disco and member of the band International Pony (DJ Koze & Cosmic DJ) did a stripped down remix showing that less is more.

Sam's first appearance on Toy Tonics was 2 years ago. Sam came up with the Sport House EP. Here he revealed his very own way of making music: he plays synths, keyboards, knows about chords and makes a type of organic house music with lots of saxophones, great jazz chords, based on southern rhythms.

Sam’s house music reminds the more Balearic vibes from the 1980ies or the early disco house vibes. Some might call it organic. And yes, it’s house, it’s 4 to the floor, but he got that special human, handmade vibe that people look for today... after the overdose of digital music of the last 10 years this new way of making dance music might be the perfect mix between analogue and digital. 

Sam already released an EP with Italian disco last year. Not only is mike "father of the year", but he also has records. Deep crates, as they say. MIKE FEEL LOVE will keep the chin scratchers at bay for a while, seeing as the original cover has zero internet presence. It will also keep the dancers happy. A scrappy little edit keeping the sloppy instrumentation in tact, because it's the best part of the song. Drums fall out of time, or drop out altogether. The synth arps fall out of synch which makes you wonder if that's an arpeggiator, or some maniac playing live. The other side is a very old edit Mike dusted off and is guaranteed to make the chin scratchers take a bathroom break- seeing as it is a top 40 hit from the 70s. Which doesn't mean it's not a burner.

Today’s premiere comes by way of London producer G. Markus . Known for his releases on Roots For Bloom and Monologues Records, he has crafted a groovy house sound complete with vocal samples and funky bass lines. This year G. Markus has put out a string of so-called « G-Edits, » including a brilliant edit, of an old disco groover G. Markus picked up at Montreal's very own Disques Beatnik on a trip to the city last year, repurposing the syncopated rhythms for the dancefloor. The producer is back with the third installment in the series, with two tracks that follow suit in soulful grooviness.

The A-side track, ‘Ichiban,’ is an eight minute disco burner with a driving kick and shuffling hi-hats. Bright keys offer a simple chord progression and occasional melodic motifs, leaving space for the complex bass line to take centre stage. A subtle high pass filter anticipates the first vocal sample - “You’re my… play it for me” - which gives way to beautiful sax solo. Around three minutes in the vocal sample returns, this time completing the phrase “You’re my number one DJ,” from which the original song takes its name (‘#1 Dee Jay’ is a single from Goody Goody’s 1978 self-titled LP, and only album). G. Markus treats the song with great care, maintaining the effective dance elements like the bass line and percussion while supplementing the rhythms with melodic samples. The result is a modern disco edit that is free of some of the cheesier aspects of the original.

The flip side contains ‘Power,’ a similarly funky edit that features vocal and guitar samples, while a bassier kick creates a heavier vibe.

Leipzig based Rose Records is excited to announce add Gledd to their impressive roster with the Keep On EP. The Italian producer’s first release includes two tracks on a split EP with Chassé on Rose 12/13. Gledd’s tracks take hold of the listener with the instant introduction of an infectious groove. The vinyl worn drums bleed into a deep reverb as the sequence progresses to warm up the floor on “Keep On.” The funky guitar riff plays a call and response to the dreamy chords on the keyboard, buzzing in and out of the groove of the drums as vocal samples are introduced throughout. The arpeggio introduced at the midway point appropriately has hints of some Italo-disco influences. The bassline breathes with the Moodymann style of choppy disco edits while the drum breaks maintain the classic feel and warmth throughout.

“Place from Space” develops this Detroit style with background chatter sample and quick vocal hits closing out sequences to introduce new flavors. With strings and horns complimenting funky riffs and sustained disco keyboard melodies the groove rolls on and on and on. Suitable for that moment that the night turns from disco to deep house or even a sunset set, “Place from Space” plays seamlessly in any room ready to get down.

Rose 12/13 will be the first “real” split EP on Rose Records and also features two new additions to their label. The 12” will be available on 180g vinyl via the Rose Records Bandcamp on June 22nd.
