On remix duties we welcome the amazing German / South African duo LADS for their MNL debut. They take the title track in a mystique and mysterious direction and instantly show why they are one of the hot names to watch at the moment. Not that they have to prove themselves anymore; their releases on Lost & Found, Rebellion de Träumer, Nie Wieder Schlafen and Magician on Duty pretty much speak for themselves.

Gavin Rochford - The Constant (LADS Remix) [MNL]

The Gardens of Babylon is a growing international brand based in Amsterdam who specialise in full experience events that combine music, spirituality, and visual effects worldwide. Launching the label in 2019, they have quickly cemented their position as a quality purveyor of House music. 

Omri Guetta is a leading Israeli DJ/producer who over the last 15 years has built an amazing back catalogue. Named #1 Underground DJ in 2017 at the Tel Aviv Music Awards, his magical sound is soaked in emotion and his label Frau Blau continues to impress. Fellow Israeli, Omer Tayar, has an equally impressive career in music. The guitarist and DJ-producer has been showcasing his exquisite, diverse music selection at the leading venues in Tel Aviv and beyond. Additionally, he has been spearheading the music production department at the highly respected music school Rimon. The two recently joined forces for an endless number of upcoming releases and an exciting live project.

Opening the EP with delicate melodics and sparse percussion, ‘Ever So’ begins its journey with class and style. Building in intensity over the mid-section, the main break provides a moment’s rest before spiky synths drive the final section home hard. ‘Trip In’ is a deeper excursion. Hollow pads and percussive FX keep the groove deep and attention grabbing. Mutating main lines cause an explosion of interest midway and become delightfully musical. 

On remix duties, German DJ extraordinaire and Younion boss, Re.You takes ‘Ever So’ down a darker percussive path, focusing on the emotional side drawing out the tension with clever sound design, while Portuguese artist, Xinobi, adds his substantial studio skill to ‘Trip In’ making it even deeper and melodically rich.

Next up for The Gardens of Babylon, the super smooth sounds of Gab Rhome (@gabrhome) on the ‘I’ve Made The Bed For You’ EP ably supported by Francesca Lombardo (@francesca-lombardo), Baham (@bahamcollective) and Sorä (@sora-paris).

Canadian sensation Gab Rhone has come a long way since breaking onto the scene in 2013 with a release on Guy Gerber’s Supplemental Facts label. Starting out as a DJ in his hometown, it wasn’t long before his natural ability was recognised and he quickly progressed into the big leagues, with music now signed to everyone from Lee Burridge’s All Day I Dream to Sasha’s Last Night On Earth.

Capturing those warm analogue feels with soft melody is a trademark for Gab, who unleashes more delight with opener ‘I’ve Made The Bed For You’. Groovy hats, a swinging bassline and sweet vocals make this a joy to hear from start to finish. On remix duties UK-based Francesca Lombardo deepens the groove for a late-night wig out, teasing the main motifs into a darker sound. Fellow Canadians, Baham, create a new atmosphere with their sparse, jazz-influenced take. Sombre muted trumpet and vocal word samples take this to new heights.

Moving on to their second original production, ‘Chandelier Cleaner, a disco-y bongo groove and saw-toothed bass lead the way. Vocodered vocals midway add a nice curveball for the more refined floors. Sora take a wholly different approach completely reimagining the track with tinkling arps and an air of hopefulness.

Breaking into the scene in 2018, Armenian artist Socko (@sockolive) has made great strides as a DJ playing for the majority of clubs and events in Armenia, becoming very popular in his motherland. Opening his production account in 2019 on Pipe and Pochet, Socko is now signed to several influential labels including Behrouz’ Do Not Sit, Shango and down.

Opening with two tracks featuring Romanian artist IV-IN, ‘Queen Is An Eagle’ a low- slung, nu-disco vibe saunters with bluesy vocals. Rubber band guitar licks and sleazy keys provide musical asides as the track gathers momentum midway before an oasis of a break and chunky conclusion.

Next up ‘Ghost is Not Human’ continues apace with nuanced guitars forming the low end, and moody keys punctuating the sombre male vocals. Organ lines midway add energy and interest. Finally, with the vocal talents of D’Litte, the EP draws to a close with ‘Red Wet Dress’. Ticking clock percussion and sweet vocals juxtapose in the most delightful way as a disturbing mutated siren signals the introduction of bass and tension. A thoroughly classy and creatively complex debut for an artist on the cusp of worldwide notoriety.

“Floating” is a collaboration of To Ricciardi and Mâhfoud that ranges from dub to electronica, passing by house, with three songs and a remix from Moullinex. Starting the EP with a club track “Floating” where Mâhfoud’s voice takes you into a suspended moment with melodic fluctuating sounds. For the remix, Moullinex took the hypnotic vibe of Floating to another dimension with a synth-focused dreamy adventure.

Leading you into two versions of “La Vie en Noir”, built on nostalgic synthesizers and a touch of French house’s dreamy keys. The fraying and touching expressions of French poet Melody Sanderson bring the song into a deeper realm and combined with Mâhfoud’s harmonized profound voices you are taken to a mystical “Film Noir”.

Releasing on their family label Klassified, Floating EP will be released on June 9th 2022.

In 2020, Uone and Western released a ten-track manifesto of cinematographic desert house, ‘The Lone Wranglers’. The album – every instrumental element of which was recorded live – set a bold precedent for would-be soundtrackers of dust-ridden doofs. In ‘Desert Fire’ (the duo’s first release since their ‘Lone Wranglers’ album), they return with a stripped and earnest sound, distilling their vision-questing aesthetic to its essence.

At home among the most low-riding elements of ‘The Lone Wranglers’, ‘Desert Fire’ holds onto the apocalyptic intensity that characterises Uone and Western’s sound, with a violin lead, sweeping dub pads and vocal snippets uniting to form something filmic and visionary. Fittingly, the track samples Jarmusch’s 1995 psychedelic Western, ‘Dead Man’, an ambitious project that burst with prophetic literary allusions. And for a production that hints at the day of reckoning, there’s a surprising optimism to ‘Desert Fire’, which culminates on this parched line from the film’s protagonist: ‘The only man who’s got the guts to sell his soul for love and the power to change the world.’

On the flipside, Anjunadeep favourite Elif delivers a remix that’s DJ-friendly but laconic, cutting the violin and pitched percussion to let the piano chords cavort alongside Elif’s bewildering synth-lead arabesques – some of the more complex programming you’re likely to hear on a festival floor this season. The cerebral Istanbul-born producer has rocked festivals from Amsterdam to Tulum, and this understated B-side combines her understanding of dancefloor dynamics and music theory.
