Label co-boss Pseudopolis touches down on Redstone Press for the third time. If you’ve heard the last two you know the drill.

Taking no prisoners from the outset, “High For Life” establishes the mood of the EP, combining unrelenting breaks, bouncing basslines and a big-room energy that acts like a pressure release after many nights making music with no clubs in sight, a track that doesn’t loosen its grip throughout.

“Euphoria Inc.” keeps the room at boiling point with Pseudopolis expertly fusing climatic rave energy, broken breakbeats and a murky Reece bassline into an equally euphoric yet foreboding warehouse tool.

“Haze Runner” continues with the ruffneck breaks but raises the bpms and dread level, sounding like something that would soundtrack your teenage weed psychosis or your current 6AMs spent in front of your favourite Jungle sound system’s bassbins. Speaking of bassbins…

We are delighted to welcome Eris Drew to the label under her new guise “Bassbin23”. Years of dancing, rejoicing and playing dusty warehouse raves have informed this rendition of “High for Life”, stripping it back to a fun filled 4x4 rave weapon. We couldn’t think of anyone better to do the first remix on the label, bigups to you Eris!

Her phone screen stared back at her, its brightness forced her to squint in the darkness of her bedroom. She poured over her phone night and day; getting lost in apps that nobody needed; falling into video wormholes in the depths of social media; doom scrolling sections of the internet that she never knew existed. Without it she felt as though she were missing a limb, it had become an extension of her very being - how could she possibly live in a world without cute cat videos, emoji conversations and countless filters at her fingertips?

Leeds-based independent radio station NARR was launched just a few years ago as a space to share and discover experimental music from across the world, from new beat and post-punk to ballroom and noise. As a way to raise money for their studio costs and the running of the station, they've announced their first compilation cassette that's comprised of 10 tracks from NARR residents and friends. Made up of music from the likes of Monophonik, Bleaching Agent and Zmatsusi, the release digs into the outsider sounds at the heart of the station including new wave, synth-pop, avant-garde electronics and dubwise selections.

After a first release on tape with Ripopée, the Geneva-based trio strikes back with L'Oiseau Magnifique, a playful and poignant blend of intricate harmony and storytelling lyricism. Armed with a thrift-store synth, bizarre wit and arresting vocals, the intergenerational, all-female micro-choir Alice releases a mammoth 23 track album. Alice’s music subverts French and Occitan folk music to create a unique sound that combines art-pop, folk song vocals and synth experiments.
Formed in 2018, Alice is the brainchild of artists Lisa Harder, Yvonne Harder, and Sarah André. The group draws on their experience of intuitive singing at home and with friends and family, as well as Yvonne and Lisa’s history of performance in choirs and Sarah’s storytelling career as an author of graphic novels. With mother and daughter Yvonne and Lisa playing the keyboard in unison and all three of them singing along with intuitively harmonised words, Alice’s music produces a choral polyphony from just three voices, while sharp lyrics reflect on universal emotions and the poignant moments of their everyday lives alike.
Each track on the record is a document of a moment or experience in the past year of Alice’s lives, traversing the humourous story of ending up at a disappointing party on La Fête Nulle, to the foot-stomping hand claps of La Décapotable, which drily comments on people who cruise the highway in a convertible and try to pretend they are having fun, and the multiplying word associations of Fil à Recoudre, which plays as a tribute to the unfailingly optimistic people who will let you know there’s no such thing as bad weather.
Exploring the new spaces that this shared creativity has unearthed, Alice creates beguiling music from the humble origins of just voice and keys. In their minimal combination, the trio produces everything from the neoclassical funereal dirge of Petit et Gris, to the soaring melodic melancholia of Oiseaux Magnifique, and the 20-second chanted crescendo of La Lune. Theirs is a singular sound that momentary experiences and their stays with you – songs that you of their crystalline vocal power and delves deep into the beauty of underlying emotions. It is one that will want to play again and again.

The release features 4 original tracks of percussive house with broken beats, lazer beams, intricate pads and energising rhythms; polyrhythmic patterns that reference dub and house at its finest with an intricate load of emotional synths and bubbly soundscapes.
La Fragua EP emanates a woozy aura throughout its originals. On the remix bid we have 4 re-interpretations: a heavy yet emotional and ravey remix by Nico. A retro-celestial house remix by Sunday Sunday‘s resident dj, Soos. A perfectly chopped up broken beat cut by Wavawav‘s label head Ranma Entero, and a sentimentally futuristic take on Fuego Nuevo by FKA Lil Tantrum.

Weirdo London based producer Birds is back with a new release on her label, Feed The Void and this time she’s brought a few friends with her. The sophomore release features music from DJ Blech, Parallel, Tadan and V2 and Bereza, as well as a new track from herself. 

Opener ‘For Want Of’ is a dubby, acid infused chugger from Laster Records founder DJ Blech. ‘Snake’ by Parallel sees him put out his most breaks influenced release yet, following some slower indie-dance inspired releases on labels such as NEIN and Inflect. ‘Humanity’s Absence’ by label founder, Birds, is an intense bass heavy track featuring her signature reverb laden dystopian rhythms, off-kilter synth-lines and of course some acid. Tadan and V2 continue on with the dark Lynchian vibes with their sludgy punk driven electro track ‘Don’t Tell Me’, recorded during one of their late night studio sessions. Bereza is a new Alias of Anton Berezin (Seven Knives / Wolfstream/ Otchim) and is something completely different from anything he’s done before. He provides the VA’s closing track ‘Mates’ which is heavy duty breaks belter. The aim of Feed The Void is to provide a platform for the various genres that inspire Birds (real name Katie Wilkinson) and this first various artists compilation really does just that.

TL PREMIERE : Lambrea - Slow Planet [Laes Records]

Funk The System! The recipe is simple: Dig deep, listen to your heart, record everything you got on a dusty old desktop computer, leave it to simmer for the time of a pandemic, and if it’s still fresh, serve it up on the finest plate of black wax!

This collaboration started in Düsseldorf in the year 2018. Locked up for a week in the Flanger Studios, Wolf Müller and Credit 00 recorded everything: from the jaw harp to smartphone apps, chopping up GDR Jazz breaks and squeezing the Funk out of every synthesizer and drum machine at hand.

You will hear the open mindedness towards all sorts of musical influences from the first note. Each of the five tracks showcases a wild mix of flavours: Disco Reggae, B-Girl Breakbeats, Protest Folk, Subway Funk, Tabla Rhythms, you name it... they’ll take it and shake it! It is obvious these two got sonically socialized and educated by the multiculturalism of Hip-Hop in their early days.

After the first Recording Session, the tracks fermented for some time until they were cracked open again. This time in Leipzig at Credit 00’s Westend Workshop. That’s also where Rizmi from Birmingham joined the team and lent her voice to the title track. She reinterpreted the lyrics of the obscure German 1980s Workers’ Rock Song, that Wolf digged out for the Intro Skit of „Funk The System“.

A long time in the making, Rat Life is very happy to finally publish this EP!
