He walked atop the padded floor across the gym, taking in the uncomfortable stares and awkward glares from onlookers. The machines rattled, raced and echoed as people pushed their bodies to the limit, testing their endurance and strength. The room was hot, the heat reverberated between dense writhing figures and soon too he would feel just as phased by the dizzying warmth. Now as he approached his station he began to move and sway, for his workout, his routine was a dance. 

Escape Artist is a producer we've kept a close eye on over the years, having released a number of tracks which have caught our ears. The Australian producers latest appearance is on a compilation by Truth, a sprawling affair which features cutting edge electronics and material for the dance.

Highly ELEGAL material indeed!! From what we can tell its a rag-tag collection of obscure and hard to find tracks from the years 92/93/94. Featuring melodic breakbeat from early San Franciscan rave act Enlight, moody Techno from James Bernard’s Cybertrax project (the track in question here having only seen the light of day on the 1994 ‘The Secret Life of Trance Volume 3’ compilation) and epic Trance-breaks from Germany producer Utasia. Bootleg style!?

ELEGAL1 - Various Artists

One of Australias hottest emerging acts right now - Escape Artist - returns after his unapologetically rip-roaring release on Roza Terenzi's Kalahari Oyster Cult and his noble yet equally fantastic bush fire release record earlier this year.

This time round he lays down a four tracker for Temporal Cast, sporting heavily acid ladened dance floor shaped cuts, each encapsulating a sense of cadence and narrative. We premiere Techno Emergency which rounds off this perfectly crafted records on the flip. The acid bass line which has become such a prevalent tool for producers of late anchors the track, yet always gives the feeling there is more to come. All we'll say on this one is, wait for those pads.

Bristol-based Zobol cruises his way back to Earth on 3-track EP Solar Return. A club-ready excursion through the cosmos propelled by warm breaks, positively charged rhythms and acid licked riffs. Sedgwick’s homecoming is aplomb with hot, headsy electro interposed across a lewd landscape of tripped-out transmissions. We get straight to it with ‘Metal Detector’, a bewitching, twisted work-out delivered with such conviction it could be straight from 1997 Anthony Rother. With elements of breaks, electro and techno - ‘Exit’, the A2, is a pulsating peregrination around the geography of underground sound; hybrid heads - take note. On the flip of the record we are greeted with 'Pleasuresque' a quasi-old school breaks track which delivers a vibey electronic grit, balanced carefully with serene pad work and sparse moments in the track - it's the masterful arrangement here which allows Sedgwick to push the musical tension to the next level. Elsewhere, ‘Blue Print’ is a beautifully paced synthetic trip, one for the “sun coming through the shutters” crew. Closing things is ‘Bermuda Dream’, a markedly poised, high-octane dreamscape of emotional intelligence and a confident gaze ahead. Welcome to the future.

The last days of summer were here, he watched from his window, looking out upon a bedraggled city in the glow of the dying sun. Outside they were dancing from the East to the West for they feared not the darkness which would soon fall and engulf the bleak, burgeoning chaos of a place. If this was to be the last of the blue skies for another year then it was right that they looked to make the most of it, for that was to be the way of things these days. Sweet in the beginning and bitter in the end.
