There was a strange atmosphere in the amphitheatre, onlookers were perplexed by what they'd seen, fascinated and intrigued. A rumble reverberated from the tall speakers in each corner, blasting noise down upon the gathering with a ferocious force. Soon they would all be under the hypnosis of the spell, the performance had begun.

There had been concerns that this would be too big, too grand and too ambitious to pull off but as the lights became dimmer and dimmer it was clear that the plan had worked.

Soon they would all be long gone.

Wolf Music are celebrating the work of Soul Purpose with a new EP made up of music recorded in the late nineties. Still sounding just as fresh and relevant today, these tracks have been given a well deserved lease of life.

Turner Club is a new venture by two friends, one “professional gambler” and one “bricky”, who met on a dancefloor in the northeast of England in 2004. Here, kicking off their new record label, Turner Club Music, the pair deliver a foursome of melancholic 80s-tinged house jams laced with honest, heartfelt vocals.

If you’re a fan of vintage synths, classic drum machines and artists like Depeche Mode & Larry Heard stick around – there are bags of retro vibes to be found on the ‘Hearts and Minds’ EP.

The first track, ‘Confusion’, is all about “the madness of your soul”, exploring themes of mental despair. The vocals are raw and unhinging, which reflect this, but are paired with a hardware groove and a palette of jutting synths. The title track, ‘Hearts and Minds’, continues this intimate narrative in its vocals, and piles on the powerful 80s drums even more.

‘Silhouette of Love’ takes a break from the 4x4 house style, slowing down to what is simply a raw love song over straining synths. ‘Escape’, the final song on the EP, moves into the UK Broken Beat realm. Giving off vibes of Kaidi Tatham, it’s – like the rest of Turner Club’s music – as danceable as it is emotional, creating a unique juxtaposition.

Feeling like the first shot of sunshine after a long winter, Cousin Kula sound instantly recognisable yet gloriously renewed on their second album ‘Vitamin D’. If their debut album ‘Double Dinners’ was the soundtrack to your heartbreak then this is the sound of falling back in love again. Even the titles of the tracklist - 'Clothes Off', 'Staying With You’, 'Good Feeling' - boldly set the coordinates for this new body of work. From the opening wash of searing synth chords, bouncing bass, wailing guitar lines and flutters of flute, it's abundantly clear this is a feel good album. Label boss Bradley Zero exclaims “I think it’s fair to say that the band have shaken off the collective cobwebs and are ready for a summer of love!”.

Singer Elliot Ellison explains “We really wanted this album to be playful and fun, not taking itself too seriously. Be representative of us as a group and the energy we have when just goofing around, for that to be something you feel in the music too. Lyrically it covers many themes but especially steps into “Happy Love Songs”, which feels like a new venture for us”.

‘Vitamin D’ is for the lovers, but also for the dancers. Cousin Kula have expanded their vocabulary but also learnt when to just sit back in the groove. Funk and disco has permeated their psychedelic indie-soul sound and it’s all the better for it. A quintet of virtuosic musicians, flexing when necessary but more often than not stripping it right back and reveling in the pocket. It’s a rare case of perfect thematic and musical synergy.

Elliot continues "We explored more instrumentation on this album and stretched previously underused corners of our ability. Will and Elliot play trombone and trumpet on a few tunes, Doug plays flute on the whole album (and strangely, no saxophone!), and there's a whole lot more percussion. It's been fun experimenting with the vocals on this album too, we wanted to really lean into the ‘weird’. Likewise with the vocal harmonies, we wanted to make that feature of our sound even more of a thing on this album, like going a bit more sexy BeeGees on it".

Living together, nestled in the sun-drenched hills on the outskirts of Bristol, Cousin Kula released their first full length 'Double Dinners' on Rhythm Section Intl. in 2021. The album received praise from BBC 6 Music, Boiler Room, Clash, Crack, and The Guardian, to name a few, and saw the band tour the UK with Mildlife on top of their own non-stop live escapades.

Zopelar returns to Tartelet with Ritmo Freak, an electric eight-track album from the beating heart of the Brazilian underground, out May 10.

In a flurry of madcap sampling pitched towards the heat of the night, Pedro Zopelar builds on the premise of his 2022 electro-funk love letter Charme, shifting his approach towards a particular 90s flair and a method with a specific end result.

Ritmo Freak took root in studio experiments for a momentous — and rare — live set at São Paulo festival Não Existe in 2023, where Zopelar was caught up in one of those right-place, right-time moments we carry with us through life. As he explains himself:

“This album is dedicated to freaky club culture. While I was playing at the festival there was a crazy tropical storm outside and the room was packed with the freakiest crowd. I've tried hard to immortalize that feeling on this record."
With the intended energy in mind, Zopelar focused on a particular mode of production centred around 12-bit sampling from his ample record collection.

Considering his background as a trained pianist, here his musical instincts are forced to work within the limitations of short, snappy cuts from dusty 12”s. The lo-fi sound sources and the resourceful ways Zopelar works them gives the record an unmistakable old-skool flavour which he applies to forthright house, techno and electro funk rhythms, always taking care to draw out the soul of the music.

The stylistic touchstones flow past thick and fast on Ritmo Freak. From the amped up fierceness of the title track with its gaudy, cut n’ paste, vintage techno flavour to the effervescent electro funk of ‘Gabriellinha’s Boogie’ on to the surreal Balearic inversion of ‘Distraction’, this is a high-velocity, endlessly charming record bursting with the musicality Zopelar has made his name on.

As the driving force behind many warehouse parties in São Paulo, Zopelar has been immersed in club culture for a long time, and his distinctive catalogue of jazz, funk, acid and techno has graced highly respected labels like Apron, Selva Discos and Mother Tongue. Throughout, he’s displayed an affinity for the tangled roots of the groove with an open-eared, big-hearted sound. That’s what comes through on Ritmo Freak — a record as infectious as it is well- informed.

PREMIERE: Zopelar - Safe In The Dark

Optimo Music loves a bit of serendipity. We had been really digging all of 2023’s releases by Will Hofbauer, which ticked all our boxes, when an email dropped into JD Twitch’s in-box asking if we’d be interested in releasing some of his tracks. Would we ever!

Thus we are delighted to present 3 tracks of outer space bass dub designed for advanced danceflloors. We asked Will to tell us a bit about the tracks -

These three tracks right here are just a couple of Dingers!! They’re a bit different from my usual fare, so I’m super super happy for them to have found un espacio en Optimo! 

The first one, Diiing, was just a fun experiment with some funny vocals and faster drums. As for the other two, if Leech is a big old slug crawling through a damp cave, then Can Dub is a fun little skip through the woods. The enormous reach of dub’s influence is clearly running through all three of these, in my opinion, but defo in the last two :)

Overall, I just feel like I’m a massive fan who is lucky enough to have a crack at making and putting out stuff really. I’m super chuffed to be writing this little quote about this release! If you’ve read this far, I hope you enjoy the music!!
