PREMIERE: DAGFEST - Fever [Cut / Chase]

For his third full-length album, Jacques Renault explores his craft through the format of the classic late-night radio megamix. It's a tour de force that finds him blending his quick-cutting DJ sensibilities with his crate-digging, drum-chopping disco-chemist bonafides into one wham-bam party of pastiche.

This is Renault as we know him—but at hyperspeed, tearing through twentythree tracks in under half an hour. And while it's a head rush of his trademark funky drums, sassy horns, playful synths, it's arranged as an album, with songwriting and structure at the fore. 

Imagine it as a flip on the script for Renault's most loved club 12-inches of the past, which luxuriate in long-form, stretched-out grooves that burn for hours, fills that ride for days. Instead of on pulling a thread for six, seven minutes, he romps around in a bouncy ball pit, plucking out whatever captures his imagination for a moment, then diving back in to discover another buried nugget. It's Jacques Renault as we've always known him, but this time through a suite of bite-size vignettes instead of slow-burn grooves.

Sabo's imprint Sol Selectas closes out 2021 with a stunning three-track release from label favourites Derun who are known globally for their tribal rhythms and enchanting melodies.

Derun are a duo from Istanbul, Turkey who in addition to their music on Sol Selectas, have released tracks and remixes on other labels including Bar 25 Music, Cosmic Awakenings, Pipe & Pochet and Akbal Music.

Taking influence from their local heritage, Derun's music has vibrant rhythms and middle eastern melodies that fuse modern day electronic sound with traditional instruments.

All three of the organic house tracks are true to the trademark Sol Selectas style, and the release has been lovingly curated by Sabo.

"La Sombra del Viento" which translates to "The Shadow of the Wind" has mesmerising vocals and flamenco style guitar layered over the flowing rhythms of sequenced percussion. The track's concept is to be an expression of our lifetime experiences. Flowing through the winds of time, along the way we leave behind little pieces of ourselves, and our shadows mark the trail of which those shards are scattered.

Track two "Ven Hermosa" translates to "Come Beautiful One" and its Arabic flutes intertwine with violins and dramatic percussion that tells a quirky love story. Based on the concept of a woman who’s being courted by two men that both promise exquisite wedding gifts if she accepts their marriage proposal. The music builds with a vigorous energy as the men try to outdo one another, but then ends abruptly, as eventually she laughs, and decides to reject them both.

Closing the EP is "Descalzo" which translates to "Barefoot" and it’s a collaboration with ARKADYAN. Sombre trumpets swing through the nimble guitar chords that dance and intermingle with the congas and other percussive textures. Strongly influenced by flamenco, it's a modern take on a classic kind of dance music.

The artwork by Helia Jamali personifies the shadow of the wind into a magnificent wild horse, running through the universe and around the Sun.

Nick Scofield continues to craft a sound of his own. Centered around a backbone of sturdy grooves, he explores realms of melodies both retro and futuristic. With a pair of appearances on our Tales of Romance series, as well as the timeless Highway 1 EP gracing TOR last year, Scofield has built a hearty foundation in the early stages of his journey. As we venture into the new year, we are thrilled to have Scofield back on board for his second full project on the imprint - the Foggy Night EP.

The project’s namesake opens the show in scintillating fashion. Drenched in percussive persistence, rhythmic rotations instantly frame the groove on Foggy Night. Eastern strings provide a lush melody, while ominous synthetics elevate energy throughout this heady cut from Scofield.

Zagroutah keeps the organic rhythms flowing, while a classic house groove nudges us towards the light. Afro-tinged influences come to the fore from the early stages, while an electro-synth hook surprises the senses. A delightful flute performance is the cherry on top of this one, which cohesively checks all the boxes; a tune for the true groovers.

Closing out this sumptuous trio is Opulence. Low-slung drums get the vibe rolling, as Nick harnesses deviant deep tones through punchy synth stabs and a tripped-out vocal chop. Look no further, this EP succinctly summarizes the Scofield sound.

With previous releases on Delusions of Grandeur, Voyeurythm and more, UK producer Ben Sun delivers a gorgeous blend of deep textures that hearken back to the golden era of NY and Chicago with his ‘Distant Messenger EP’ on Razor-N-Tape.

The A-side, ‘Transmission’ has all the vibey goodness of an early Strictly Rhythm record, while ‘Sable Sun’ scuba dives into Larry Heard territory with lush pad swells and squelching acid lines. On the flip, the emotive motion of ‘Tremors’ builds through hypnotic arpeggiated synths, a slow-rolling bassline and crystalline melodies, and the record finishes in proto-house territory with the Peech Boys era Larry Levan inspired ‘Red Light’. This EP may wear its influences on its sleeve, but it looks (and sounds) classy as hell.

Ahead of the LP release ‘Self Reflection’, Oath are pleased to present the first single off the new Melchior Sultana record, ‘Dogma’, which in many ways gives a delightful teaser of things to expect with his latest long play.

In true Sultana fashion, the opening is a full to the brim emotive affair, with sultry chords flowing our way atop a collection of impeccably balanced percussive elements, and before long the organ makes itself known, acting almost as a free agent amongst a sea of cascading grooves. The bass line that perks up at certain moments only adds to the momentum this track has, with the hi hats piercing through the remaining space like a knife through butter. The listener is placed within it all, captivated by the emotional lead organ line and enticed to move by the unreal sense of rhythm. The sense of evolution comes in the form of the guitar work that places itself effortlessly within the second half of the show, with little key flourishes acting as the icing on top of a faultless performance. It’s classic Sultana, with flair aplenty and an enormity of good vibrations to get lost within, with his multi-instrumentalism on full display to be appreciated and taken in. In our eyes, its a superb indicator of the overall experience that is found within ‘Self Reflection’, so be sure to stay tuned for that - hopefully, this track is top of the list as a soundtrack to your latest walk in the sunshine….

Those tasty Glasgow types Manakinz (Sub Club legend Harri and Max Raskin) are back with their third EP for Monologues, filled with another three beguiling, heavyweight, innovative belters.'Electric Bob' kicks off with the dreamiest of chords and heady vocal delays floating over a chugging groove, before 'Lovely Lugz' takes things in a moodier direction with Hamish Hay's infectious afrobeat-flavoured guitar licks, tribal percussive rhythms and a stomping bass groove. 'Nifty McPherson' rounds the EP off in tripped-out style, with hypnotic FX and bugged-out synths bringing a psychedelic edge to this varied EP.

ECLECTICS RELEASE OCIO DE HOY EP BY CANEBRAKE 

Straddling styles and formats like a Balearic Colossus, Eclectics come correct once again. With ‘Ocio de Hoy’ by Canebrake, you get both a digital and vinyl release of a pitch-perfect EP that will worm its way into your ears and earn a place in your heart. 

Two searing originals leading the charge while two carefully crafted remixes cover the ground left unchartered is fast becoming the M.O. for the Bournemouth-based Balearic label. 
This EP, from Canebrake Sam Bruce (AKA Mallorquin), is no exception.  

“Borne Upriver” opens proceedings with bursts of bass tentatively testing the water. Once we’re ready to dive in and go with the flow, we’re rewarded with guitar licks full of crisp lines and delay that repays again and again as the pedal shows its mettle. 
If you need a steer as you drift downstream, think of the Idjut Boys jamming with Pete Shelley. But with all the rough lines delicately rubbed out. 

Eclectics mainstay James Bright throws caution to the wind as he finds a new tributary and sails upstream powered by disco drums and piercing acid lines. Snatches of guitar and cleverly handled melody mutations let us know that it’s the same vessel, but taken in a new, exciting direction.  

The second original, “Contento de Saber”, puts us on a firmer footing as the bass goes deep to take root while an 808 snare leads the way to the dancefloor. It combines classic sounds and elemental building blocks, to create something new, yet familiar. Searing synths, persuasive percussion and laid-back guitarist side-by-side, never overwhelming, complementing rather than competing. It is, to use the parlance of the age, an absolute banger.     

Another friend of the label, Joe Morris, takes up remix duties on “Contento…” and conjures up the kind of exotic, intricately patterned musical topography that has become his fingerprint - a sonic seal of quality. 

If you’re looking for something to leave you rocking and reeling between the dark and the dawn, this EP has it all - music for the day and the night, the sun and the shade, the body and the soul.
