Opening two tracks from a project called Forrestfield '79. It's a cycle of tunes about an experience I had in Forrestfield, North Lanarkshire. In 1979, obviously. Some years previously, there had been a creepy story about a "fortune teller" plying her trade in the area and freaking out her customers with increasingly dark predictions about their futures. She herself disappeared under mysterious circumstances, and I was convinced that she was lurking around our street, crystal ball in hand. In 1979, when I was 12, my dad met a bunch of his golfing buddies at a pub in Forrestfield. (I think it was called the Forrestfield Inn.) I was with him, as were the kids of his pals. (Beer for the men, half-pints of Fanta for the boys.) We were about the last to leave. Our car, a brown Austin Allegro just about started, but about half-a-mile down the road it shuddered briefly and conked out. It was about 10PM on a freezing cold winter's night, on a remote country road. No mobile phones in those days, so my dad told me he was going to walk to the nearest phone box. "Just sit still until I get back," he said. "What about the fortune teller?" I asked, petrified.  "Aw Christ not the fortune teller again," he said, before turning towards the fields and shouting, "Madam Medusa, Madam Medusa, come out come out wherever you fucking are." And then to me: "Just sit here, okay? I'll be twenty minutes." He was more than 20 minutes, and it was one of the worst nights of my life. The introductory music here is an attempt to capture what 1979 felt like to me ——–— a perpetual theme tune to a show about a cynical copper in an industrial city.

Forrestfield '79:Black Moss

After much buggering about, I'm going to release this thing next week. Bloodstone is a studio project with myself on keyboards and guitar, and featuring Will Campbell (guitar), Beano Jameson (bass), and Freddy Threader (drums, tambourines). Class resentment led to the firing of Threader after two sessions, so some of the drums are in fact played by myself and Will. The project is basically an excuse to indulge our obsessions with Satanic 70s horror, both British and European. Here's an unmixed demo of one of the tracks.

Wiawan

Beano (bass), Klaus (keys), Lofty (Will) (guitar) and Maff (Matthew)(drums) get it on! Although we've played on each others' tunes for a few years now, this is the first time we've all been in the same space to make music. Here's one of the results, a clip from a jam recorded live at Shabby Road, captured by Maff and presented here for your aural delectation. Obviously the sample is an add-on. I think we hit a nice groove considering that no eye-contact was made. I was staring at a wall, Lofty was looking at the back of my bald napper, and Beano and Maff were off in a special booth. The movie clip is from Peter Walker's The Comeback, and features the great Sheila Keith ranting about the dangers of pop musics.

Detective Inspector Bob Ferrier, together with paranormal researcher Susie Richmond, arrive at Salisbury. Tasked with investigating the so-called Penumbra cult, an organisation linked to the disappearance of several children, they take (separate) rooms at The Vintner's hotel. After a late supper both retire to bed, but Ferrier is unsettled to discover a sealed envelope on his pillow, bearing, written in a childish hand, a single word: Ladybird.

Track 1B

Little jam round an arp figure, all recorded on the Moog Grandmother. It's a mono synth, so all chords have to be built up from single lines, a process I found incredibly interesting, especially when you modulate each line individually. Instead of the chord being a monolithic block, it "hangs" together in a slightly ghostly way. Only additional processing is a bit of delay on the lead line, courtesy of the Electro-Harmonix Memory Toy pedal.
