Like Sarah Palin during the 2008 election, candidate for NYS Assembly (97th District) Joe Chabot fell for a political "prank" inspired by "Les Justiciers Masqués," and revealed himself to be a shadow candidate for narrow special interests.

The fallout from the release of the call a week ago was swift, harsh and necessary: Preserve Rockland and Preserve Orangetown immediately cut ties with Chabot and strongly endorsed his opponent, incumbent Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee. Local and County GOP officials desperately tried to boot Chabot from the Republican line; alas, however, it was too late (the same was the case with Chabot's position on the Reform line). Within a day, buzz of Chabot's betrayal to his community in Orangetown was swirling. At an unrelated political fundraiser at Austin's, rank-and-file Orangetown Republicans denounced Chabot, who was notably absent. It's clear Preserve dodged a bullet with this exposé of a candidate's true intentions and affiliation with narrow special interests.

A valuable lesson was learned: On the local level, party affiliation is meaningless if we have candidates who bow to special interests. Preserve Rockland and Preserve Orangetown reach to both sides of the aisle in their endorsement of candidates who stand for "Equal Treatment for All, Special Treatment for None."

Chabot apparently did not learn a lesson from this, and continues to dig his heels in, rebuffing repeated calls from his former political confederates to drop out of the race - underscoring his in-the-pocket backing from narrow special interest groups.
