Aire v.3 is an audiovisual album generated with machine learning tools that analyze patterns of the pollution from different cities around the world: Mexico City, Bogotá and Sao Paulo. The data comes from the predictive system of the Resource Watch, designed by the World Resource Institute and the NASA. Interspecifics has created a series of sound and visual compositions showing the pollution dynamics in the air of each of these three cities. 

The first stage of this project revolves around an audiovisual experience in 10 minute segments where cityscapes made of elevations from 3D maps and satellite images are shown alongside generative sound compositions. 

The pollutants are analyzed in a saturation scale, with each one assigned its own sound identity that responds to the flow of data by the means of a modulation or control signal. The most relevant and particular patterns detected by the machine learning tool developed by Interspecifics–, have the function of activating and silencing sound events as they occur, establishing the structure of the entire composition. 

This project was developed with the support of the Air Quality Department of the World Resource Institute in Mexico, and with advice from Dr. Beatriz Cárdenas.

Physarum movements

During the fifth edition of the festival Novas frequencies in Rio de Janeiro, we were invited to perform a laboratory for sonificar activity of the bacteria present on the beaches of Rio. In the laboratory  10 local artists were selected through an open call. For a week we work together enabling a compact version of Bending Energy Lab that allowed them to create an interface between bacteria and their instruments. Thus creating the first non-human rhythms orchestra.

Micro-rhythms is a bio-driven installation where small variations in voltage inside microbial cells generate combining arrays of light patterns. A pattern recognition algorithm detects matching sequences and turns them in to sound. The algorithm written in Python uses three Raspberry Pi cameras with Open Computer Vision to track light changes creating a real-time graphic score for an octophonic audio system to be played with SuperCollider. The cells are fuelled using soil samples from every place where the piece is presented, growing harmless bacteria that clean their environment and produce the micro signal that detonates all the processes in the piece. Understood as an interspecies system, the installation amplifies the microvoltage produced by these microscopic organisms and transduces their oscillations into pure electronic signals with which they create an audiovisual system that evokes the origins of coded languages.

Por medio de timelapses obtenidos con nuestro biotracker x/y y con la técnica de displacement mapping, logramos capturar la motilidad y dinámica de esta bacteria. Y con ello, construimos la pieza musical bajo la técnica conocida como composición asistida por datos.
