Somebody starting following me on Twitter when I had some Tweets about surfing and the ukulele. It was weird when he responded and said he wanted to send me something in the mail. So I gave him my address and soon a dusty old box showed up...
      
      In the old wooden crate was a bunch of smaller boxes, and in each box there was a wax tube. Well I'm no dummy, and I recognized them as phonograph cylinders. It also happens that the local 'heritage museum' has a old machine that will play them. Here's what I discovered...
      
      The crate was labeled 'Angus Black's Surfboard Wax', and each mini-box was labeled with his logo and a song title. His gimmick to sell his stick wax was to record a song on each cylinder as a free give-away. When you got tired of the song, you just melted it to wax your board. (Wax is also slang for a record album, you know.)
      
      Amazing! Songs selected for surfers, recorded right on the stick wax. According to the original packing list for the box, this shipment is from 1902, which is possible, I suppose, since phonographs were launched in the late 1800's.
