Although the name Burr Oak is one which has only just started to become acquainted with the drum & bass genre, the faces behind the outfit have already made their mark over its last formative years. A new venture between The Clamps and Opsen (known for making up one part of the Signs project) their first release through the Trendkill platform sent shockwaves throughout the wider dance music scene. ‘Time Has Come’ and ‘Originate’ were selected by label owner and pivotal figure Prolix, setting a standard for the pair which they’ve followed with their forthcoming single. 

Burr Oak shown that they’re no strangers to high production standards and an enviable work rate. Just over a month from their first release, they have continued their expansion across the world of drum & bass through brand new tracks ‘Bannockburn’ and ‘Struggle’. These are two tracks which signify just how electric the pairing has proven to be, something which has translated into their music. The first of the two is ‘Bannockburn’, with an introduction alluding to just how explosive the drop is building up to become. You’re catapulted through a zipline of shaking subs and slamming drumbeats, with a bassline that drives straight through the tracks core. Both producers show their experience in the way they masterfully manipulate sounds and the result is chaotic, yet still streamlined in its composition. 

The second part of the forthcoming Trendkill single is ‘Struggle’, just as cutthroat as its forerunner, although its hooks cut deeper and deeper between every drum relay. ‘Struggle’ yet again demonstrates that Burr Oak aren’t afraid to go for the jugular and they do this with the utmost precision, something which shines through their expert craftmanship. Stabbing synths slice their way through the mix and before long you’re totally enveloped by the carnage. It’s another monumental step in the evolution of Burr Oak – something which Trendkill are nurturing, as they have done countless times with artists who are now dominating global stages.

Much time had passed since that first moment of DIVERGENCE, in which one had sacrificed the joys of his existence for the betterment of all. Where once a man had stood, now a great tree remained, presiding over the village with the commanding presence of its incredible size. For years the magic of its boughs had shielded those below from harm, but time had worn upon its trunk and the wards that it projected now threatened to falter at the onslaught of the spirits that had long thrown themselves at the border. A single life, it seemed, could not keep evil at bay for all eternity. This fact was known to the council of the village below, and as the great tree began to slip from the world, they set in motion a further plan.

In the depths of one of the great mountains that surrounded the village, its every inhabitant worked tirelessly, hewing and hauling the stone bones of the earth out from the grand chamber they were constructing. At its center, the village’s most skilled artisans worked diligently, inscribing the face of a great obelisk with runes and symbols in a language known to none of them. Night and day the village toiled, until at the final strike of a pickaxe they heard a most ominous sound. A pained groan uttered its way through the valley, followed by the thunderous impact of what could only be the felling of the great tree. The villagers cowered within the cavern, watching in horror as the spirits of evil began to flit about the ceiling above them. Yet as all seemed lost each spirit that had entered the chamber was wrenched downwards, its essence bound to the great obelisk, which trapped their visages in caricatures of agony upon its surface. Though the flood of spirits seemed unending, each and every one soon found itself within a similar stone prison as the dissonant howls of these creatures of evil faded into nothingness within its earthly being. At this sight, the village rejoiced whilst remembering the one who had sacrificed much for them. Though life could not hold back the flood of DIVERGENCE, stone would bind it to its inescapable form.

EATBRAIN their ninth LP with the second release in their DIVERGENCE series, featuring 16 tracks from the many sonic leaders of the label’s vast horde. Within is presented EATBRAIN’s full sonic scope, which spans the breadth of the neurofunk spectrum with tracks from JOE FORD, AGRESSOR BUNX, MIZO, FOURWARD & more - as well as sonic sequences from a variety of rising artists within the genre. “You ever done seen a varmint like this one before?”

Spurs firmly entrenched in the dirt and hands hovering over the holsters of their six shooters, a pair of lone cattlemen stared with befuddlement at the being that stood before them. Rising from the cracked desert soil was an amalgamation that seemed to be composed of every plant able to hold on in that heat blasted wasteland, as though the earth itself had taken offense at the idea of a cattle drive through the largest desert on the continent. Its bones were of the great saguaro, riddled with millions of piercing needles, and across its flesh ran a layer of bindweed that flowered with the sickly off-white petals so known for strangling the crops in this western reach of the country. Perhaps most uncanny was what seemed to be the monster’s “face” which mimicked humanity with a pair of massive seedlike eyes and teeth of razor sharp yucca as it gazed menacingly at the insignificant forms that lay below.

In the face of this monstrosity stood Scruggs & Sonny Jim, sharing in the courage of a bond built on years of shared experience driving cattle across the great expanses of the continent. With wordless and fluid synchronization, the pair drew their revolvers and fired a pair of shots directly into the eyes of the great beast as they sprinted for their saddles. Though they knew the shots would not kill, for indeed they doubted if such a behemoth could even be slain, theirs was an action that might yet secure their escape. Driving their spurs into the flanks of their mounts, the two took off at breakneck pace away from the massive form that now emitted an otherworldly howl behind them. The ground shook with the weight of the monster’s lumbering movements, but the duo’s fine horses held true to their course, and behind them the nightmarish horror disappeared in a cloud of dust. Yet even as they rode on into the sunset, the pair was not alone. High above, they were trailed by a hawk that watched them keenly with the exacting precision of its predatory eyes. Though Scruggs & Sonny Jim had escaped for a time, the land was alive, and it was always watching.

BURR OAK hop in the saddle for their first full EATBRAIN EP, following a feature track on the label’s Divergence II compilation and a set of previous EP’s on the like minded Trendkill Records. A dynamic duo composed of The Clamps & Opsen, BURR OAK now drive the EATBRAIN horde onwards to new sonic horizons as they deliver their fully loaded HAWKEYE EP to the horde’s myriad ears.
