Hi and welcome to Let’s Word Up! Each day we post a word of the day to help you improve your English language skills.

Today’s word of the day is grizzly.

Nouns are words that we use to name things. It can be a person, a place, a thing, an
idea or concept. Therefore, grizzly is a noun.

Grizzly is the name of a type of brown bear that is native to North America.

An example of grizzly used as a noun in a sentence would be:

A loud sound woke her up and she peeked out of her tent to see the terrifying sight of a huge grizzly walking by.

Or, Grizzly bears are seen as dangerous and aggressive but they are not likely to attack unless provoked or scared.

Grizzly can also be used as an adjective, with two meanings. Firstly it describes something as being grey or grey haired, usually indicating age or experience. Secondly it describes a child as being inclined to cry fretfully.

An example of grizzly used as an adjective in a sentence would be:

He came back from the island with dirty clothes and a grizzly beard.

Or, Don't be a grizzly baby, it's going to be okay I promise.
